Revit Type Naming from Parameters – Native Feature Request

Revit Type Naming from Parameters – Native Feature Request

One of the biggest sources of error in BIM is manual type naming. A simple yet powerful improvement would be a native Revit feature that allows users to auto-generate Type Names by concatenating selected parameters.

For example, a window type name could be built from:

[Width] - [Height] - [Frame Material] → 1200 - 1500 - Alum

This would:

  • Reduce manual errors
  • Enforce consistent naming
  • Make schedules and tags more reliable

Ideally, the Revit template could select 2–3 parameters in the Family Editor or Type Properties dialog, choose a separator, and have Revit build the name automatically.

BIM is only as good as the data we put in — and naming mistakes shouldn't compromise that.

Would love to hear if others see value in this or have workarounds without dynamo work arounds.

Hey is there a way we can get family type names with cancatenated values, this would be of help to get measures automatically in elements, lets say: Wood Table - Lengthxheight

2024 now, why do we still not have this 😞
I suggest to Autodesk to look at 'family'-creation in Tekla Structures. They have this function and it works like a charm.

2024 now, hello?

437 votes, and I don't feel like it's such a difficult thing to achieve, please Autodesk...

Yes please.

Families and parameters could use a real overhaul to make the info in them more functional. Autodesk needs to just lump together all of the many ideas posted here for families/parameters and build the type editor from scratch.

I found it somewhat misleading that this 'new' idea already got more than 400 votes. Reading through the comments that date from before this idea's inception, it may be good idea to note the original idea's date when merging ideas. Something like 'Merged with an idea from 20170402.'. Looking at the new idea's date this may also be a cruel april's fool joke.

I like the idea, but I would prefer if the naming with parameter could be also editing in the project file through "Edit Type" window, using tags as "@Height", "@Thickness", "@Material", etc.

This could help for unifying libraries with different units in names (imperial, metric or metric with naming in mm to make al naming in meters with two decimals).

But also there would be components were the user wants the units in specific format (like Windows dimensions "@Width" and "@Height" as default in meters per Project Units, but "Glass Thickness" in millimeters, maybe like "@Glass_Thickness%mm".

I always says that Revit should also let the user for label/display (project) parameters and views (maybe with different character for views like #) into text notes and tags (maybe element parameters for tagged object or text notes with leader associated to an element). :
