Replace existing family parameter with parameter service shared parameter

Replace existing family parameter with parameter service shared parameter

Replace existing family parameter with parameter service shared parameter

When edited, an existing family parameter can not be converted to a shared parameter originating from the parameter service.  We need to be able to select a parameter service shared parameter while in the edit window.

Existing Revit families, or those from manufacturers that are being prepared to work with our template, frequently need family parameters converted to shared for the purpose of tagging or schedules.  This has traditionally been done by editing the existing parameter (which may be attached to multiple model elements) and then switching the source to a shared parameter.  That is not an option of the shared parameter should come for the parameter service.  The parameter service shared parameter has to be added separately, then either tied to the existing family parameter with a formula or every existing reference to the parameter being replaced needs to be changed manually.

Crossover from same post over a year ago on the ACC Ideas Forum on suggestion of @Ric_Weber   This is still just as much as an issue, especially as we try to upgrade old families to using parameters on the service.

Wow!  This idea needs some help!  Maybe a comment here will bump it up in the Hot Ideas list?  This is highly needed for the Parameter Service service to really take off!!

This functionality is mandatory if parameters service is expected to replace shared parameter files. For example downloading and modifying families from internet to work with company standards can require parameter replacing.

OK, based on the lack of votes for this idea, I'm guessing that means not many folks are testing out the Parameter Service.  This is something that is essential to really being able to fully adopt the service for use!!!  Which we want to do!!!  Or is Autodesk themselves giving up on this?  Autodesk?  Any comments??

The fact that this has three whole votes is very sad to me.

I've tried to use it a year ago to store shared parameters just for digital twin purposes and the system was terrible.

Any mistake you make created legacy trash that you simply could not get rid of... A bit like Bridge but for Bridge we have no real workarround, for shared parameters we do, so we decided to not use this new feature until it gets fully usable.

As you said, it's not being the priority, because we do have the "normal way" to do this. I have no problem in Autodesk putting this on the back-burner.

What I would really like to have them develop is a replace shared parameters without losing existing information - AI fully sugesting you have parameters applied to not needed categories, or duplicated, there is a world of possibilities that could potencially reform a bunch of plug-ins and dynamo scripts we BIM Coordinators have been using to clean up messy models. Now that would be an interesting win for me.
