Recent Files view - "Do you want to create a new Local File?"

Recent Files view - "Do you want to create a new Local File?"

Here's an easy change to the recent files view. Instead of launching straight into an outdated local file. The recent files view should recognize the local files and also display the central file name/location. When a user selects a local file from the recent files view, Revit should prompt or even better, just default to create a new local file. It's so silly that all of us BIM/Revit managers have to instruct our users not to use the recent files view for opening files.

Morning, Rolly!

I posted a similar idea last week.

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/hide-the-quot-local-copy-quot-process/idc-p/6343642#M746

I'd like to jsut see the entire "Make Local"/two file process go away - or at least be invisible.

Revit should ALWAYS start from the Central, and should ALWAYS make a Local. But the user should never see that happening.

Morning, Plumb!

Yes, I saw your idea. While I agree that it needs to be easier to deal with, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to make the process completely invisible. People need to know that there are central files and local files, especially when they're uploading and downloading them. They just need better tools to work with them.

The frustrating thing is that it would be such an easy fix! We're just talking about an easy interface change. Revit already knows the difference between local and central files. Why not adapt the interface to fit the preferred workflow?

I'm happy to announce that Revit 2019.1 makes a significant change in this behavior with the new Revit Home. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Thank you! I'm so jazzed that I had a part in that change.
The 2019.1 home page is wonderful! Great job. Beyond what I had imagined. The file properties on mouse-over is a very nice touch.

@sasha.crotty   I do not see local copies in the 'home' dialog on open(& create local)  in 2019.1... If local isn't auto-populated as an option for load... Logically there shoudl be some BIM management (.INI) settings to

  • "Request" (or "Force") recreating of files that are more than x hours old i.e.
    • more than 24,
    • 168,
    • and/Or every Monday/tues/wed/thu/fri/etc
  • Inform "Local file present" [But is out of date]  and open dialog:
    • [Create new file from central file]
    • [open existing local file]

In the image below I opened the 1st file in the list and it shows a LOCAL was created but when I click to open it wants to recreate the local every time. When I leave for lunch I don't want to come back and recreate my local, it is much faster to reopen it... Or if I am jumping around on multiple projects...
