Partial Demolish by saw/division

Partial Demolish by saw/division

Besides the hammer, which demolishes complete objects, there are times a saw is needed to saw away object parts. I know, you can split things / create parts etc. but clicking and object and draw saw lines for the part to cut away is so much easier...

It would be great if we could have a "partially demolish" tool that would prevent us from having to deal with parts.

Yes, for floors, walls, beams and foundations are what I'm thinking of, I'm sure there are others. The workflow is cumbersome to make partial demolition. Break up objects, then demo the part you want rid of. A partial demo tool would be very welcome.

I agree!

Simplest example: you need to create an opening in a floor or a wall in the "demolish" phase.

You need to model it in advance, taking into account that some part you will later demolish, use join-geometry etc.

Also, when you demolish a door or a window, Revit automatically closes the opening which is not what happens in the reality. Please, leave an option to the user will it be filled or left as an opening.

When doing renovations to an existing revit model, there will no doubt come a time when you need to delete just a "portion" of a massive floor slab. The process to demo this "portion" is to first copy the existing slab to the same place. Select the copy then redefine the portion of the slab you want to remove in the sketch to represent the demo extent. copy the boundary of this new demo extent from the sketch, edit the existing floor sketch. paste in the boundary from the demo sketch, delete all the sketch elements from the existing that are now in the demo area. select the demo area, set to existing phase then set demolished in current phase...... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhh. 🙂

What would be better, is if we could use the demo tool to select a portion of a floor (or wall, or beam) instead of the whole thing. the portion would then be split from the original and set to demolished. To hard to program that? Would allowing us to split floors be easier to do? At least that would save us having to duplicate as described above. Sure we would have a bunch of split up items but we would be getting to the end result quicker.

I like you're picture 🙂 very relatable

That said, I think this idea would be better implemented if openings would react to phasing. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/ability-to-phase-wall-openings-demolishing-in-new-phase/i...

In your example, you could then use the shaft tool.

@Pieter always gotta lead with a picture, it catches the eye:)

I like that idea too! Like someone else said on that post, the shaft needs to respect the phase its on. I've tried to use that before to only not be able to put a floor in the area of the shaft. I will vote for that idea too! gotta hedge the bets!

I like this and quite frankly, there have never been enough Demo tools. this is a perfect example. I hate that to show and phase these types of scenarios you need 3 versions of the object, the existing, the demo, and the final product....Smiley Frustrated

More Demo Tools Please!!!!

Current implementation of the demo tool is far too restrictive. I too would like to see a partial demolition tool. Another things that really bothers me is that sometimes you don't want to demo items but rather reuse them elsewhere. For example, I want to move existing door or window, or some piece of mechanical equipment. Revit does not support this model.

This leads me (again) to the circumstand, that Revit lacks of one necessary function. Splitting existing objects.

This is needed not only in demo. It's needed for reworking quick models for calculation. When you do concrete works you have to define the steps for construction and the rebars for these steps. Then you can use these in your plan for the building site.

You can't do that a.t.m. without remodeling your entire concrete parts. So splitting existing parts along one or multiple planes is necessary.

What you're touching upon here also makes 4D planning using a combination of Revit & Navisworks very difficult. Unlike Synchro, you can't split the model into pour sequences, sequences for panels etc/ very easily. Allowing better splitting tools & breaking up items would be really useful & is possible in other softwares (Synchro, ArchiCAD etc.) so should be fairly straightforward to programme, you would imagine.

@Anonymous & @m.steffannoe I agree!

ALSO ... this is very applicable to Roofs and Ceilings.

Also, Demolish phases aren't saved in groups what is very annoying if you model a renovation of a large building using the demolish function.

For those kind of building I personally have stopped using it in favor of project parameters but the demolish function needs an update.

I came across this topic today: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/demolish-by-saw/idi-p/6640741

Seems like they are both asking for the same thing, perhaps @SeanSpence can ask the moderators to merge the two to combine the vote?

@sasha.crotty Are you (or one of your workmates) able to merge the idea from @Simon_Weel as mentioned by @pieterschiettecatte above? they are essentially the same idea.

Please add the ability to divide a floor, with the end result of two floors within the original perimeter and sharing an new boundary line between them, so that part of it can be demolished. Process could be similar to the "Cut Profile" tool .

Bonus tool: further adjustments to the boundary between the two floors modify both floors.

Floors / ceilings / roofs can be turned into Parts, then divided. You can change the phase on these divided objects

Revit Parts Help

I haven't used parts much, so thanks for the tip.I see that turning a floor into parts opens up some options I've never seen before, and one of them "divide parts" is sorta what I'm looking for, but I don't want parts when I'm done and it looks like that's not possible. I will check out the help link you provided, and am hoping to find a way to divide an entire floor into two separate floors so that part of the original floor can be demolished.

The bad thing about Parts, is that the object convert into Parts and stop being a Floor, Slab, Roof, Wall or whatever; so the Filters, Visibility & Graphics setup are not useful, and you have to manage different Categories as one, Parts.

Thanks for the information about parts. That confirms this workaround introduces more complication than benefit worth pursuing. I'm back to my original asking for a tool instead of a workaround process.
