Opening Linked Files

Opening Linked Files

Would love to see Revit be able to open linked files, without running 2 different sessions.  This would enable quick collaboration and make life much easier.
As a side, if you do Open (and Unload) from within your Revit session, i would like it NOT to open the Central file, but rather "create a new local" as you normally would.

I'm voting this up but your suggestion doesn't go far enough - there needs to be much better ways of working with linked files and communication changes with those models.

I'm not sure if C4R helps with this it may do but  I would like to see something working out of the box off our own servers.  I see this as being crucial to the future success of REvit / BIM.

Revit does need enhancement/development introduced to the way it handles linked files, locals and centrals...nobody can deny that and say it is perfect but I am not sure if this idea/suggestion falls fits in that context.

The way Revit currently communicates and sync changes between all those models/local/central/links is already complicated enough...and creating a new locals out of links to have it open in the same session; I am not sure that is easy to control in terms of info exchange & BIM management  ... Have you considered the workflow? how would it be affected on multidisciplinary projects on large scale projects?

Maybe I am missing out on something but as simple as the above description is; it looks like it's a step back towards decentralizing the work

With more clarity and details it might turn out to be something else and probably I might vote it up...but just as it is; it's a definite No

This would have multiple benefits, especially if it were integrated with some type of multi-window functionality.

For example, I often open the arch model in a 2nd Revit session and throw it on the side monitor. This is GREAT for quickly copy-pasting info between them (such as the project info & titleblock fields) but TERRIBLE for anything else (can't copy-paste north arrow or graphic scale families, etc.).

When needed, I open the linked model detached in the same session (to do the copy-pasting w/o unloading), but then it becomes very AWKWARD to deal with the two models or try to compare views from each. It's also IMPOSSIBLE to make changes.

We always put the Topo in a separate model (so it can underlay), and several projects require multiple models, in which cases it requires multiple Revit sessions reloading back & forth (would also be nice to have a "link needs to be reloaded" feature like AutoCAD does).

But for me, an additional benefit would be (if the user only ever needed one session of Revit): the user could NEVER open the same model twice AT THE SAME TIME. I've had one user (multiple times) open two sessions of Revit (in a project with multiple models) and loose track of which models he had open where (personally, I use postits on my monitor to help). The result was that he wound up opening the same model in each session of revit. This causes some odd behavior (and the local files being overwritten by each other - i.e. LOST WORK). 😞

One thing I always wish I'd see in a Revit update is the ability to open a revit link within your model as a LOCAL file rather than Central. I like that now you can just unload the link for yourself rather than everyone. But wondering why Autodesk doesn't allow us to open the linked models as local ?

Good question

I think this is the same idea posted at 2016 , wishing to compile both,

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/opening-linked-files/idi-p/6339419

it is really great if implemented.

... in addition to opening through project browser.

It would be helpful if we could open files attached as links in other files by clicking on them instead of going to open and unload.

The ability to open linked revit files without the need to close the main revit file that contains the link would be productive.
