Nested void family cutting other family (or multiple elements) in family

Nested void family cutting other family (or multiple elements) in family

A face based family (1) with a void can cut one element it is placed on in the host family (2) and then loaded into the project.
((1) placed into (2) on face of element and placed into project.

This works.

We need a void through multiple elements. So instead of 'one element' we swap this with 'one family'(3) to be able to use the face based family.
((1 placed into family (2) on face of nested family (3) and placed into project.

This doesn't work.
It works fine in family(2), family (3) is cut as desired but as soon it is loaded into the project, the voids don't cut anymore.

It is essential to making type steered multi-layered panels with adjustable voids.
Alternative: make non-face based void families cut (multiple) elements in the host family (that also still cut when loaded into the project).

It would be nice to cut multiple objects in a family.  Right now as soon as you cut geometry with a void, I would have to recreate that void extrusion and re cut it on the new object.  Doesn't seem to matter if I join the objects together either.

The void is still there, it's just hidden. You can already cut multiple extrusions with one void if you hover over the area where the edge of the hidden void is located. However this does raise a good idea: make the hidden void visible in family editor - maybe a faint dash would do the trick!

ability to cut a family  (e.g. a generic model family) by an "in place family" with void.

Hi Autodesk,

It will be great if the nested family elements can be cut by the void in the family editor.

Recently I was developing a spring family and I want to cut the top and the bottom of the coil to make it flat.

But while I attempt to cut the nested family, totally cannot.

So I try to do it inside the source family I got the following error.

I attached a video as well, for better clarity.

I think Revit got limited control over the element created by a curved surface.

Because I experienced a similar problem in the project environment with family created using a curved surface.

Following screenshot for your reference.

Allow sub families(children) to be cut by voids in parent families

Yes - I need the same.

A face-based family (1) that contains a void. - (Hole)

is nested into a generic model family (2) to cut a hole(s). - I need to be able to count holes in a BOM schedule, hence the nested family. - The hole cut and shows just fine at this level.

However, when I load that family (2) into either another family or project (3) - The hole(s) disappears. - When cursor is hovered over family (2) in project/family (3) I can see the hole is there, it is just not cut.

This seems like a bug - I can't imagine why this would be intended behavior

@Chuck.Ross

I am not seeing what you described here (Revit 2022).

- a face based family with void, shared - (a)

ToanDN_1-1642712217177.png

- a generic family with a solid, shared - (b)

- nest (a) in (b) and a hole is cut

- a generic family (c)

- nest (b) in (c), multiple instances. and they are still cut the same

Thanks for the reply!

I confirm what you see in Revit 2021...

However, I missed a critical bit of information in my explanation of what I was looking for:

The element that needs to be cut in family (b) is another nested family (a.1) not a solid.

I'm having trouble with nested void family not cutting a nested host family in a parent family when that family is loaded into either another family or project.

I have a Generic Model Family (c) - (used to create hardware that will be attaching a concrete panel to a steel frame)

Within that hardware Generic Model Family (c) there are:

  • a Face Based Generic Model Family (a) that consists of a void that is used to cut hole(s)
  • and a Generic Model Family (b) that is a piece of steel plate or angle etc.

Within Generic Model (c) I cut a hole through (b) with (c). - I use this approach so that I can make a Hardware drawing of C and use a schedule to list the counts and parameters of Steel and the Holes in a Bill of Materials.

Everything looks fine within Family (c), however, when I load (c) into either another Family (d) or a Project, the void no longer cuts the hole. - It is there, if the cursor hovers over the Hardware I can see the hole is there, it just doesn't cut... 😞

(Note, if the void family (a) is cutting a simple solid extrusion the cut persists, but not what I am looking to do.)

This seems like a bug to me, I can't think why Revit would want to behave this way.

They would behave normally if the Void family and the 1st level Solid family is NOT shared.  But that would affect quantity take-off for those sub-components in the project.

Thanks for the reply. - It is definitely the Shared parameter that is affecting the cut. - I did a little experiment and isolated the issue to setting the family that is to be cut to be Not Shared. It doesn't seem to matter what hole family is set to.

I would like to present the idea of allowing nested families to be cut by other elements in Family Editor, for example, voids created directly in the Family Editor of the parent Family.

The current functionality does not the elements created in the Family Editor to interact with the nested families.

With the new functionality, the cut could be made for the nested family with void extrusion made directly in the parent Family Editor, without the need to load it into the project:

This would be extremely helpful, when working with nested families and trying to cut something.👍

Cutting a simple void extrusion out of a nested Family in a Host family would be really great👍

- would make live for creating complex nestings really easier!

please implement!

On top of what you are suggesting Karolina and along the same lines, I would really like to see the "cut with voids when loaded" option in families work as advertised e.g. having a void in the family cut into non-hosted parts of the model, like the example attached.

Cuts with voids when loaded.jpg

Example; a  garage door cutting a recess into a floor and for it to do this automatically

Currently, we can cut a recess into the floor by using a generic family object in the door family but we have to manually use the join geometry tool each and every time to get the desired result, but this would be far better for this to happen automatically as mentioned.

Families with voids.jpg

The desired result, the floor has been cut by the door family.

Families with voids 2.jpg

I appreciate that I am trying to cut part of the model that is not hosting the family itself, but this would be a very useful addition for families cuting into the model.

While we're at it, add the ability to join/unjoin nested geometry.

This feature works great as described in the documentation when loading your void family into the project environment:https://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2022/ENU/?guid=GUID-7C940A08-1F62-465F-89BF-3800E3446FC3

However, this feature does not work when loading your void family into another family (nesting it).  When you try to cut the family using the cut tool, Revit wont let you select the void family.  There is not documentation describing the limitations of this feature.

"Cut with Voids when Loaded" should work in the family environment (for nested families)!

The only other option we have is to use a face-based family that has a void that cuts the host.  However, this type of family will only cut one element in the host family and you cannot make it cut multiple joined elements.  The requested update above would solve this issue.
