Make OSL the procedural standard for all Autodesk Materials

Make OSL the procedural standard for all Autodesk Materials

With the release of 3ds max 2019, Open Shading Language (OSL) is supported, an open source procedural shading language with a large user base. You can view more here (demonstrated in 3ds max). It occurred to me that OSL would be the perfect procedural shader to use in all the Autodesk Materials instead of the overly proprietary and inflexible shader types currently available.

The result would provide a wealth of shaders for all the Autodesk applications interchangeable across all collections, from simple patterns such as tile or pavers to complex textures such as wood, concrete, and marble. Many of the shaders are free and Autodesk could even create an area in the Exchange where users could acquire these for their projects.

My link did not come through for the OSL video:

Great idea, I agree!

There is another advantage here. It opens up some interesting possibilities for other render engines such as V-Ray and even Autodesk's Arnold renderer.

As I look at this a little further, it seems MaterialX is the method by which to achieve this goal. If all the Autodesk Materials were to switch to the MaterialX spec, this would facilitate the transport and interop of OSL procedurals between all the Autodesk applications and beyond. In fact, you could work from Revit to 3ds Max to Unity, or Fusion to Maya to Katana with a linear material workflow.

You can read more here:

While this might seem to be oriented to Visual Effects Workflows, I contend that MaterialX is ideal for ANY workflow where a physically accurate material is needed to define a look for geometry.
