As an MEP electrical designer, I've been through about five or six major core and shell projects and every time we try something a little different and it never really works. It's almost always a painful, slog of a process involving tons of manual coordination between two models or two sets of sheets in the same model. Here are a few of the issues:
If you stay in the same model:
You can't easily keep two sets of sheets in one Revit model because you can't have the same sheet name twice in a model. You can get around this by adopting different naming (e.g. Core and Shell set is 1A0001 and Tenant Fitout is 1-A0001, etc.)
You can't place a viewport on two separate sheets, when this is needed.
Models can be slow and large (however this is less of an issue nowadays).
If you split the model into separate models and link to each other:
You cannot connect to or from electrical panels in a linked model. (This is the biggie that keeps us using monolithic models).
You have to manually sync changes in both models if scope overlaps.
As it stands, I lean towards not splitting projects. I'd love some input from other users here.
However I think Autodesk really just needs to build some tools to make this easier. Thanks!
