Handling of Toposolid Materials with Subdivisions

Handling of Toposolid Materials with Subdivisions

I’ve encountered a recurring issue in Revit 2025 regarding how Toposolid materials are handled when applying subdivisions. The problem arises when a Toposolid is assigned a grass material, and a subdivision surface with asphalt is added on top. The grass material from the original Toposolid remains underneath the asphalt, which becomes problematic when exporting the model to Lumion. Since we use 3D grass material in Lumion renderings, the grass ends up protruding through the asphalt, disrupting the visual fidelity.

Suggested Improvement:
It would be incredibly helpful if Revit included a feature or setting that allows users to automatically remove or suppress the material surface of a Toposolid under subdivisions. This would ensure that, in cases like this, the grass does not interfere with the asphalt or other subdivision surfaces, especially when exporting to rendering software.

Such functionality would greatly enhance workflow efficiency and prevent the need for manual workarounds to address material conflicts.

Same thing happened when I was using the older versions of Revit/ Lumion combo. I had to make sure subregions under the pads, or pads under concrete slab didn't have the 3D grass material applied. Subdivide tool in Revit 2024 onwards is absolutely useless, because sometime we just want to create a region with different material, not another material (with a thickness) on top of the base material...

I have the same problem. Any Quick fix suggestion. Tried to cut out all site under the subdivision. But it fails

This should be fixed when revit implements the posibility to have subdivision recess into the toposolid, wich is already an accepted idea.

Status changed to: Implemented

We are pleased to say that this has been implemented in Revit 2026! Thank you for your contribution to improving Revit!

I'm using the 2026 version of revit and having similar issues. The toposolid subdivision properties panel only provides a subdivide offset option, not an option to edit materials or contours.
