Full dark theme

Full dark theme

Revit currently only has the ability through Options>Graphics to change the color of the background which in a small way allows for reduced eye strain but it leaves the browsers etc in white so it is only a part solution.,

as Autodesk did very well with AutoCAD. Thanks for consideration

@Ilic.Andrej I'm trying to achieve the same colours that you're working with,

I've changed the windows theme to dark as well as the revit theme to dark. I'm still getting a black ribbon and black menus (project browser, properties panel, ...)

Can you give me a hand in this?

@Anonymous I cant.... Maybe it depends on the version of windows or Revit....Whats wrong with having black ribbon?

But I still recommend you simply invert colors with magnifier, cause there will be occasions when you want to quickly switch back to light so that you can see exactly how everything is going to be printed....

First...this idea should be merged with this one since it was posted 3 months prior...

Second, glad I searched...as originally I was concerned that the 2018 Dark UI was great, then something happened in 2019 and 2020 that changed that.  The Home Icon perhaps?  Bring back the 2018 version.

DarkUIComparison.pngNow, comparing to Autocad 2020, I like the colors of the UI in Autocad.

Even better, let Windows take care of the colors.

I had a client working in High Contrast on windows.  The high contrast setting changes the font of active buttons such as recent files to white.  Even on a gray background they are hard to see.  Autodesk doesnt seem to adjust automatically like other products do.  I informed them to make the changes to the High Contrast Theme options.  Is there any idea of having a black theme for Autodesk, and not just 'dark=gray?'

@Simon_WeelDo you have any experience with updating the color scheme .xbel files? I made simple updates to copies of the files that you pointed out, saved the file in the same directory, and restarted Revit, but the new theme file is not showing up in the UI options dialogue. Any advice would be welcome.

@sasha.crotty "It didn't get enough votes so I'm closing the poll."  God, you are SUCH an Autodesk employee.

@Anonymous, I am very proud to call myself an Autodesk employee, so thank you. The reason I feel proud is that every person I've met here is constantly trying to do as much they possibly can for our customers. I understand that sometimes it may not feel that way when the thing you are passionate about doesn't immediately get addressed, and yes sometimes it does take a long time. That doesn't mean that we're not listening or that we're not trying to make your requests happen each day. I recommend reading this post for some of the considerations that go into making an Idea happen.

I think almost any customer that has gotten to know us at an event like Inside the Factory, BILT, AU, etc would support what I've said here. If and of you are at AU, feel free to meet me in person and get to know me and what I do. Hopefully you'll continue to say I resemble an Autodesk employee, but in a very different context.

In the case of this Idea, it was closed as part of a batch process to clean up Revit Ideas as requested by our users. Since it was a batch process, I did not review each Idea individually. My regret is that I did not put that in the text to make it clear. As I've written here, I am happy to reopen Ideas upon request. You are also always welcome to file a new Idea if you think it deserves another chance. So for this idea, since there is obviously interest in the topic, I'm resetting it to Gathering Support. So vote and vote often.

@sasha.crotty You're welcome, but I don't think you got sarcasm in my reply.  😊 What I was alluding to was what I perceive to be a "fix-the-image-not-the-problem" mentality within your company regarding your products.  I've posted ideas and comments in the past where the only reaction from Autodesk when they gathered support was to move them into another thread.  Meanwhile the problem being addressed went unsolved.  And this is typified by the action of closing a voting poll when it doesn't get enough votes.  Read @Anonymous 's post about improving Revit Ideas where he says regarding older posts:

"How about when ideas get new votes, it moves to the top, just like the Revit forum, posts that are years old float back to the top if someone comments. If it really is a good idea, it will stay at the top gathering votes and visible to all. If not, it will drop off."

It's not necessary to perform a blanket archive of under performing threads and closing polls.  Just let them slide to the bottom like he suggests.  Besides, how can their performance improve if you cut them off?  They are going to resurface if they can be reached by searches so if you don't want them coming back up maybe you should delete them instead.

I got what you meant; I chose to share my perspective of what it means to be an Autodesk employee. You'll see we've got your back if you get to know us.

Without going into an in depth discussion, we use third party software to operate this forum. This means that a lot of suggestions about how to make it better are not something we're able to enable. So, we do the best we can with the tools we've got. BTW, the "Hot Ideas" ordering, sorts based on recent votes.

Regarding posted ideas, we combine issues to remove duplicates so that issues are properly stack ranked. When we do so, the votes are transferred. So "moving" (combining) the Ideas means that the Idea has more combined votes and therefore greater visibility, so that's a good thing. If someone files a new idea to replace an archived one and it starts to get a lot of interest, we can always combine the archived idea with the new one to combine the votes.

Please make Revit in dark theme. It is very practical for design work. Staring at large bright monitors for long hours causes too much stress. This topic is becoming more popular these days as a general awareness about the harmful effects of staring at bright screens is increasing. Every software is converting to dark mode because of this and I am very hopeful that Autodesk will also take step in this direction in benefit of their customers by helping them minimize work related stress and increasing their efficiency.

Another vote for dark theme here. I was about to write a post but found that other people already want this idea too. It should be a mandatory thing, as others have said. I work 10hours a day with Revit and eye strain is very much a problem.

Another vote from me... not sure why we even need to request this, every leading software company should have a dark mode available in it's products it's just common sense
