While you mentioned not wanting to spend a lot of money on a 3rd party app, that's understandable; depending on the size of your Org, Kiwi Codes Family Browser might be a reasonable option. It's less than $100/person/year.
@johnevans - Thanks for starting this discussion, (and clarifying the LAF acronym). I started using that in the first release of 2022, and at that point, you could only select one family at a time from the list -- which meant repeating the command over and over, even if you were selecting several families from the same category folder -- ugh!
Ultimately, the lack of drag and drop is bad enough, but simply the fact that it only offers the Out-of-the-Box content, which has remained useful only as a last resort (at best) for years, is enough reason to forget it even exists.
We are starting to look into investing in a CMS (Content Management System) such as Unifi or Hive, so I will add Naviate's Family Browser to our list to research for our company, which has offices outside of the U.S., making a cloud-based content system much more appealing.
If I can load a family from "load Autodesk family" button on the ribbon and have pictures why not put a "similar" button on the ribbon which calls the families in my projects.
Careful Autodesk, the description requires you to match a product that is under active development. Since accepting this idea KC have added the ability to use their cloud storage or your own cloud storage in addition your own desktop/network folders. They have two developers and one of them is a full time farmer so I doubt Autodesk has the resources necessary to catch up to, let alone keep up, with that kind of code powerhouse.
Sorting Revit families not only by their categories, but also by parameters would be usefull.
For example I would like to sort families by their Assembly Code, making it much easier to find the correct family while scrolling through the project browser.
I'm getting a little off topic with this comment, but one of the big advantages for my company with KC Family Browser is the ability to create your own custom icon to go with a family. We have something like 70 different types of receptacles and all of them are a little 3d box, so the auto-generated family preview icon that goes into the Type Selector is essentially useless. FB allows me to make an icon that displays what the plan view symbol is (generally an annotation symbol within the family). It's a bit of extra work for the BIM Manager, but makes the software a lot more approachable for design staff. If Autodesk ever address this issue of a palette specifically for placing families, I'd recommend flexibility to choose the icon displayed, such as a 3D view if your family is a chair, or a plan view/annotation symbol if it's a receptacle, or completely override the automatically created graphic with your own.
