Dynamo UI Revit 2023

Dynamo UI Revit 2023

Hello, can we please get the old dynamo UI back? The old one was way more clear and efficiënt. I don't understand why it needed an upgrade. Can someone please explain what the issues and problems were with the old one. If there aren't any please change it back or build in an option in the preferences to choose an UI.

With kind regards,

A frustrated dynamo lover.

Can you explain the issues you have with the new version? Are you talking about the player or Dynamo itself? I think the updates they've given Dynamo and Dynamo Player over the last year or so have be great.

Hey @mhiserZFHXS ,

The dynamo player update for revit 2023 is great. But i think the update in '23 for dynamo itself not so. The nodes are harder to differentiate. If you have a script with a lot of nodes it gets hard to find the node you are looking for. The old UI was brighter and more easy to read. The new design of the nodes also looks incoherent and unbalanced(the header and the output arrow for example(too big and weirdly placed)) . Maybe the second node descripes it best, "Less is more". Also note that the string in the code block in the '23 version is very small(and off center) compared to the code block itself. In the '22 and older version of the code block the data in the block is most visible along with the title of the node. Another example is that the upper corners are rounded and the lower are square. i think all these little things are destracting and make the scripting less easy and plesant. I would love to have an option to get the old UI back. Thanks for reading and replying to my message!

So purely cosmetic... I don't know what to tell ya if having rounded corners on top and square on bottom makes your work more challenging. I'm sure you'll get used to it.

@mhiserZFHXS ,

I think it was clear from the initial post that it was about the looks... Let me put it this way. If Angelina Jolie had a car crash she wouldn't be in al the movies anymore. I would think that Autodesk wants dynamo to be something that attracts 1st time users. I kinda get the feeling you just commented on my post to tell me i shouldn't be so petty about it. And downgrading my problem to just "rounded corners on top and square on bottom" even though i outlined more than just this, is in no way contributing to the conversation, or the autodesk community in general.

K, well I'll put it this way. I am fairly certain that this was not a purely cosmetic decision, as looking at darker elements on a backlit screen is generally easier on the eyes than bright elements. I'm sure it was very intentional for Dynamo to be easier on its users after long sessions. I actually wish they'd lean into this more and make the background space darker as well.

Also, there is a reason the extreme modernist ideals of Corbu and Mies died, since you want to bring in some architectural theory here. Sure, cut and dry, function over form design is "rational" and "avoids distractions", but it creates cold, lifeless environments, whether its the built world or a computer screen. I'm sure they received feedback on moving away from the bare-bones UI they had before for this reason. I know they've received feedback for Revit's UI for the same reason.

And likening this to a car crash? Angelina Jolie? What?

If you came in and just said you didn't like it, fine. Whatever. But this is some over-the-top drama king/queen nonsense.

@mhiserZFHXS ,

Dynamo is a visual programming tool. And i care about it's visuals. Apparently this does not sit well with you. I don't know why you want to prove i am wrong so badly since this is not at all what is's about. I merely asked if i could get the old visuals back and since you asked about it i took the effort explaining why. I strongly get the feeling that my effort explaining myself was purely for you to tell me i am stupid or wrong, whatever the explanation was. Again, it's a visual programming tool. I care about it's visuals. There is no right or wrong here. I wanted to echo my feelings with the community to see is my feelings would resonate. Instead you hijacked this post to be condescending towards someone else, to make yourself feel better. I hope you do and please leave this post alone so maybe people who are open to a contructive conversation can respond. Thank you

I think my critiques were quite constructive. Someone disagreeing with you doesn't mean its not constructive. I gave valid reasons for why I thought your idea was flawed. Everything I said was a direct response to something you said, and instead of responding to the critiques, you're just saying I'm mean for disagreeing.

Best of luck.

Loading an old script into a modern Dynamo should explain, why users may want the old looks back: Most of our scripts became illegible because there is more and larger node decorations present. Sometimes we could not even see where and with which the nodes connected anymore. Some nodes even cover bits of other nodes. Even if there are 'cleanup' functions built into the Dynamo UI, these should only be necessary if the users mess up their graphs. We do not need help with the messing up.

@dvos7428B and @MiWolff, thanks for bringing attention to this issue. Dynamo graphs are much harder to read in the new interface. It has been definitely a downgrade. Many users would appreciate bringing back the old Dynamo interface.
