DYNAMIC TYPE NAMES

DYNAMIC TYPE NAMES

the names of the family types should be automatically, by reporting the values of the type parameters,

the way this should work for loadable family’s will be that in the family editor on the manage tab should be a TYPE NAMES button that will open this dialog box:

Loadable Familys Notes.jpg

and for system family’s, a similar dialog will be on the manage tab in the project environment

System Familys Notes.jpg

and we can choose which type parameters we want to include in the name, and when we will create a new type, then will this have automatically a name that reports the parameters we want, and if I change the parameter value of this type, or I duplicate it and change the values, the name will automatically changed to match this values.

the benefits of this feature:

  • a big time saver, we don’t have to change name every time we change the values
  • will keep the type selector organized
  • no more problems that a team member was named a type incorrect
  • when we download a family that the type names didn’t match our name convention, we don’t have to retype all type names, just a few click in the type names dialog in that’s it
  • you can think a lot more…

Is this something that the Development Team likes? I love it. I'm surprised it only has 15 votes...

Thanks adrianc for your comments,
I think the reason why it only have 15 votes so far, is like @Anonymous mentioned in his Clean up the revit ideas forum idea.

You can share this idea with others, so we can have more people voting for this,
Thanks & all the best

This has always puzzled me as to why it is not the default naming system, as this is what differentiates the types.

You could have custom names if you wanted, however the default should be some parameter, or chosen set of parameters, unique to the family and types, that define the types.
