Dimension to snap points

Dimension to snap points

It would be useful to allow dimensioning to all the snapping points of elements, like endpoints, midpoints, nearest, perpendicular and intersections etc.. It would save me a lot of hassle from drawing detail lines just to dimension to a particular point which doesn't update itself when the elements are amended.

Obviously, the possibility to snap an dimension to an line or object for placing it.

Snapping a dimension line to the midpoint of an elements. For example two columns in between is a beam can measure the midpoint of a beam.

Right now you can snap to the middle of a line but not dimension to that point.

Often, circles are 2 arcs and you can only dimension to their endpoints. Please add middle points as a snap on arcs, and give us the ability to dimension to that point as well!

See this discussion on AUGI for proof of a general desire for this feature.

Dimension to midpoint of detail line or elements - Autodesk Community

This is a fantastic idea. It would save a lot of time in complex architectural models, where we are often drawing very short detail lines in order to dimension to the correct point.

If this option is implemented, it should be possible to turn it on / off, so that snap point dimensions don’t get in the way when we don’t need them. Maybe have a Instance parameter for Dimensions: “Dimension to Snaps” checkbox.

Agree, this is a fantastic idea. Also to include the "center" of all circular items, including holes and round objects in families.

Dear Autodesk Revit team, it would be incredibly helpful if we could enable snap points for aligned dimensions, just like we use for other modeling tools. At least for endpoints, midpoints, perpendicular, intersections, centers and quadrants.

This would making the process faster and more intuitive when place dimensions, especially in complex drawings.

Anyone else think this would be a great improvement?

You can set your snap options in the Manage tab > Snaps. (it looks like a horseshoe shaped magnet).

You can also specify what to use as a snap by typing in the shortcuts like SE or SC for Snap Endpoint or Snap Center.

Is that what you are looking for?

Edit:

Now that I re-read your post, I see you're wanting more control over snapping while dimensioning. I get it now. Sorry for the confusion (mine).

Yes, it's almost impossible to dimension an irregular floor plan like the one shown below without a workaround. I had to rely on reference planes just to get the aligned dimensions in the right place.

Having proper snap functionality for aligned dimensions would really streamline this kind of work.

Early on I would do the same, but I have found that you can start an aligned dimension from a line, then snap to a point, end of line, center or quadrant of circle, or whatever by tapping the TAB key. But there are still circumstances where even this doesn't work. Another option is to use Linear Dims if you want those dims to be vertical or horizontal on the page. There are more snap options available with Linear dims. Overall, though, I agree it is sometimes frustrating to dimension in Revit.
