Control Grid Line Extension in Cropped View

Control Grid Line Extension in Cropped View

This idea has been created on behalf of users

The idea would be to somehow add more controls on grids and levels extents lengths on sheets

Indeed, they often end up in the situation where the grids / levels extents go way beyond the views crop regions limits.

This leads to a waste of paper available for printing purpose.

The only solution so far is to manually adjust levels and grids length for all views included in the sheets which is a time consuming task.

I agree with it @kimberly_fuhrman-jones.

But more importantly, whether the makers of the two ideas mentioned also agree with your suggestion to combine there ideas! 🙂

Hi, @Guillaume.Chazal ,

What do you think about combining your post with these?

Grid Extensions - Autodesk Community

Control grid lines extend outside of cropped view region - Autodesk Community

Thank you!

@J.Dirkse  Of course! I have posted on both threads. 😊

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones, appreciate the hard work from you guys at Autodesk and loving the quality-of-life improvements to RVT2022.

May i also suggest that the following ideas get merged here, they are a little different but i suspect have the same goal:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/grid-bubbles-snap-to-crop-view/idi-p/9347428

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/setting-for-grid-level-offset-from-scope-box/idi-p/746545...

@Joey_JM  Thank you for the kind words and the suggestions for combining. I will take a look at those.

It'd be nice to have setting to control the amount of autocrop that scopeboxes apply to grids (datums). Right now that autocrop is automatically 1". This goes for both ends of the grid- where the side without the bubble wouldn't necessarily need to show that far off the view.
The annotation crop size can be adjusted to catch tags/annotation outside the view crop that are displayed; but it does not adjust the additional cropping that the scopebox is generating.

I think this is similar to the idea here: Setting for Grid/Level Offset from Scope Box - Autodesk Community

Perhaps these ideas could be merged?

I'm now running into the same issue. I create a duplicate view with dependents and applied a view template to the new dependent view. I don't know what I could've changed in my view template, but at least one of my cropped views is now showing grid lines that are way too long. Not every view, just a couple.

Did we find any more help on this issue? For reference I'm using Revit 2022.

Currently if you want your grid lines to automatically fit the view crop, you need to make a view crop which is smaller than the grid line, then right click the grid line an click "Reset to Crop", this way is quite inconvenient. Better would be to select all grids and then set a checkbox in the instance parameters, that the extend of the grid lines will always reset to view crop in this particular view if the view crop is smaller than the grid line.

You can create a Scope box for the area you want. Assign the Scope Box to the plan view you want by using the Properties Palette (of the plan view). The grid lines ends will automatically attach to the borders of the Scope Box. If you change the size of the Scope Box, the grid lines ends will automatically adjust / will follow the Scope Box borders. You can also set the offset between the Scope Box borders and the grid lines ends.

After "gathering support" for the past 5 years, has this been implemented yet? Or do we have a timeline when this will be implemented?

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones can we get an update?

Hello, I struggle with the length between the view crop region edges and the head symbols (circles) of the grid (which is in separate linked model) because the length is too long and not adjustable.

This creates the following problem: When arranging various floor plans etc on a plan-layout, I have less space available because the grid lines are so long.

The option to shorten the grid lines will result in a cleaner look and more available space on the layout.

The fixed distance is a MASSIVE annoyance:
If you set the crop region in such a way, that the grid heads are near the buildings edge, the grids edges will sit inside the building and thus will not be visible in elevation views.

We have to adjust the distance in every freaking view over and over again....

PLEASE set the distance to zero, we can and will adjust the grids crop region to make it fit!

While we keep waiting for this idea to be implemented, I've decided to create supplemental scope boxes for the grid lines independent of the scope boxes of the building and then assigning the grids to those scope boxes. Saves a lot of time adjusting grids in each view.

It would be great to have a parameter that could modify grid margins. I've been told the value is hard coded to 25 mm by default, which is too much in my opinion.

This Issue seems to still be prevalent by the looks and my own Experience.

@Slawomir_PThis Thread is pretty much what we had talked about just last week.

To recap/add my own mustard on to how this issue could be solved is to simply add access to the (most likely) already existing (but hidden) Parameter that sets the Extension in Cropped Views to 25mm until the "Bobble" so it can be Configured by the User as manually moving the extension in hundreds of views is not only a lot of manual work but also always going to be slightly different, not to mention human error if something gets moved, changed or other and thus reverting changes.

The Parameter could be accessable via Templates and the Properties Tab where Views have the toggle for the Crop-Zones, Topviews can be vertically cut and other Parameters can be set/edited.

Another accessability could be to have it set in the Project or Programm itself, though that would be a lot less flexible.

Regardless, as others have mentioned, it would be such a QoL Improvement to have access to it directly in the Baseprogramm Revit.

(As Reference, i am using Revit 2024.3, though i am not aware of this issue being updated on the newest Version yet either)
