Revit Type Naming from Parameters – Native Feature Request

Revit Type Naming from Parameters – Native Feature Request

One of the biggest sources of error in BIM is manual type naming. A simple yet powerful improvement would be a native Revit feature that allows users to auto-generate Type Names by concatenating selected parameters.

For example, a window type name could be built from:

[Width] - [Height] - [Frame Material] → 1200 - 1500 - Alum

This would:

  • Reduce manual errors
  • Enforce consistent naming
  • Make schedules and tags more reliable

Ideally, the Revit template could select 2–3 parameters in the Family Editor or Type Properties dialog, choose a separator, and have Revit build the name automatically.

BIM is only as good as the data we put in — and naming mistakes shouldn't compromise that.

Would love to hear if others see value in this or have workarounds without dynamo work arounds.

Any updates on this? Why are we not getting any response on this issue?

Checking back in on this one. Looks like no update 😞

I wonder how much further it needs to be spread across the forums https://www.autodesk.com/search?qt=concatenate&prod=Revit&catg=Community&sort=Relevance&sn=en_US&us_...

My theory is that they are just ignoring this because there is too much spaghetti code to actually implement it.

Very low on the priority list, or perhaps something more sinister.

I need it too!

Would be very very helpful to have this in Revit

This would be really helpful!

We have used a workarounds from miles long IF fomulas and overly complicated lookup tables combined with yes/no parameters to achive something vaguely similiar.

This would make every discipline happy.

This feature would be appreciated much more than most of what's been developed lately.....

This would be very helpful and certainly not difficult to implement.

Come on, Autodesk this post has been hanging out there since 2016 and no one can at least comment on it or give us work around.

The fact in 7 years no workaround has been found is telling....

Yes, there is a sad truth that

We are essentially requesting a feature that should have been available since the inception of Revit.

This would be a very powerfull and apreciated thing. We create our family's to be really parametric, i.e. all we have is a width and a height and options that can be selected by integer or yes/no (dependent on how many choices there are).
These, will bring up the product name/description, for which we get an available article number if it already exists, or an NN if not known from a size-lookup.

But currently it is impossible to create the name, unless you add an complete name in a lookup table.
Imagine how large that table becomes for a wall grill, which as a range from WxH = 225x225 to 1225x625, with steps of 5mm for W and steps of 20 for H. And with multiple options associated it becomes multiplied again and it becomes 10.000 of lines wich would be unworkable. So we have to resort to a generative name for the not existing articles, which is a shame.

With a "simple" ability to concanate text, and translate numbers to text, we would have millions of products available with just a few kb of data.....

Autodesk please add this function, we have been waiting years for this!
