Categorize Tabbed Views

The new tabbed views feature in Revit 2019 is great! Thank you for it.

It is a bit confusing when you have multiple project files open. You might have views in different projects that are the same name. It would be great if you can categorize the tabs per project by using color coding for example.

Colour blind users can use grayscale colours for tabs or most games have colour blind mode, so it is doable. 

Also moving tabs behaviour also needs to improve. It should be like on the edge browser, I should see a semi-transparent tab overlay during moving the tab. Most of the time I don't know which tab that I move or where it moves. 

Last thing, when I move the tab to second monitor and make it full screen there is no ribbon menu on top of the tab. It is just a simple window. Want to work or compare multiple projects but I need to look another monitor for seeing the ribbon menu, so I must work on same monitor.

Ribbons on multiple monitors would be a real advance in workflow but where
does it end as the next logical step would be accompanying browsers as
well.

It's not like we're requesting an interface overhaul, just a feature tweak.
Ribbons also took a few versions to get right (hands up if you've been a
user since before the 2012 release). Autodesk updates around a dozen
features each year to justify charging money for a new version, and this
should be an easy win. Another one they're neglecting is region specific
date/time settings which is simply a tweak in one line of code, but that's
another topic altogether.
The point is that the tweaks they focus on don't always make sense to
me, it's a Small Annoying Thing which they have a team for that lives
somewhere between bug fixes and the wish list.

Install pyRevit and enable tab coloring on its ribbon. Then you can use the settings similar to what @lionel.kai posted.

Just wanted to mention, while we're waiting for Autodesk to figure out this incredibly complex coding task, pyRevit has figured it out and has this as a feature. One of many reasons to download that brilliant plug-in.

The PyRevit Plugin barely does the job, as mentionned above. Though it is an infinte improvement from « 0 » to « 0.5 ». Thumbs up for the PyRevit team, no doubt!
For what I can see from past years, Revit only will do cosmetic improvements in its future versions.

Hi all,

Recently I was working on a project with multiple project models open. We struggled to determine which tabs belonged to what model. We had an idea of colour coding the tabs so that 1 model file will be red, another model be blue, etc.

I hope this makes sense

I agree this would be nice to have packaged with Revit but there is a free add-in that you can use to do this! pyRevit is one of the most useful extensions for quality of life things like this and it works with a lot of Revit versions. It can color family tabs too and set how the tabs are colored. Personally, I like my projects to have a single colored line and my families to have a colored border. Hope this helps!

Colored Tab Views Per file, to easily identify opened projects

If you check the attached image RV12, you will see 5 tabs open where the user does not really know which is which and feels completely lost. The user must look at the project browser to know what file is it the one he/she looks at!

In complex environments, the user will experience hard time to identify his files and views fast. 

Revit is a software that all you see in the user interface is mostly either black or white or gray! 

Colours are there for a reason. They can facilitate our workflow and make it fast.

In the attached image RV12 (simplistic example), five tabs belonging to two families/files are open. The idea is to add a random colour that is unified among all tabs belonging to same file. By this, the user will identify which views are for which file fast and smooth.

Surprinsingly, this concept is already applied in Revit when turning on (preview visibility), Please check image RV13. While it is more needed for files tabs filtering!

Yes, PyRevit works, but my poor colleagues with Revit Lite don't have plugins.

Unfortunately, pyrevit doesn't work with Revit 2025 (yet) :⁠-⁠(

@d_gav because they already have your subscription money. They don't get more money from you for adding this feature. 😄 

And it's not enough of a value-add to entice more folks to buy subscriptions. So it's a low-value feature that they have no financial incentive to add. The people who decide what the developers work on don't care what we want. They just want the money.

Too bad our jobs and this BS subscription model epidemic dictate we have to continue shelling out money to them. Otherwise, it'd be a nice experiment to see how fast we get everything we want if we were all to let one year of subs lapse. The ears on these corps are directly tied to their wallets. They won't really hear you until they feel the pinch.

But they know they've got us. Hence why the text editor is still complete crap (talk about, "all these years").

So thank goodness for the awesome add-on developers that bring us things like pyRevit! 🙂

So many of Revit's User Interface features are appallingly under-developed and ignored. Tabs is just one of numerous functions. Since pyRevit for 2025 is not yet available, I paid for Parallax's Neat UI. It was worth it. As they say, it's what Revit tabs SHOULD BE OOTB. The ability to sort tabs by project and view type is immensely useful and time saving. Indeed, this is how Autodesk should develop Revit tabs to work without having to resort to an add-on.
