Canceling temporary upgrade of linked model

Canceling temporary upgrade of linked model

Hi,

I don't know if this sounds familiar to anyone or that I'm missing out on something, but I have the following issue.

When opening a project with a new Revit version, the model will be upgraded. This also temporarily happens to the linked models within the project. But this can take a very long time with large linked projects. To long!

I guess the way to do it is to upgrade the linked files first, and then afterwards upgrade the host project.

However, we always obtain the Revit version in the filename of our Project files, e.g. Project_R16.rvt so that we know with which version of Revit to open the file with. (For some reason AutoDesk still does not know how to tell Revit which version of Revit to start when opening a project by double clicking an rvt-file when there is more then one Revit version installed.) Because of this, the linked file will have to be Reloaded from... the new filename and location of the upgraded linked Project in the host model. The only way to avoid the temporary upgrade process of linked files within the host project model is to remove the linked projects from the location where they are refered to within the host project model.

I would like to be able to simply cancel the temporary upgrade of linked files within a host project model.

So that I can Reload the upgraded linked files, and not have to go through the temporary upgrading process.

When I try to cancel now during the temporary upgrade, the whole project is being canceled from opening.

I agree that the process is not ideal and could use some improvements.  What we do is have all our linked models on worksets (we use one each, but you could use a single one)  When we go to upgrade we choose not to open the worksets with the linked files, and then do the same with the files.  I think you could reload from before opening the workset again.

We always leave the current version without file version addenda - We'll add a suffix when they get archived.

Thanks for sharing your idea of placing linked models on worksets. You gave me something to think about, but I would prefer if the process could be canceled.

@HE-MJJ The workset solution works now, and is also helpful when a linked model has become corrupted.

I would like changes, because upgrades happen infrequently enough that I usually forget to specify worksets on the first attempt. I think Revit might have problems figuring out how to open the model canceling upgrades - what would it do about the links?  I think a better way to handle it might be to present a dialog when the model needs to be upgrading, asking the user if links should be temporarily upgraded or unloaded.  Then when the models are reloaded it could offer to temporarily upgrade any that haven't been upgraded first.

Seems like a good suggestion to me...

Agreed. This should be optional, and I wish it could offer an estimate of time needed.
