Automatically create IFC.RVT as a Cloud Model when linking IFC in Revit Cloud Projects

Automatically create IFC.RVT as a Cloud Model when linking IFC in Revit Cloud Projects

Linking IFC files is a fundamental workflow when working with external models in Autodesk Revit.

When an IFC file is linked from a local drive, Revit automatically generates an IFC.RVT file. This file is maintained by Revit and gets updated whenever the IFC link is refreshed.

However, the workflow behaves differently in cloud projects hosted on Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

When an IFC is linked in a cloud project, Revit also generates an IFC.RVT, but this file becomes a regular Revit file instead of a cloud model. Because of this, the model is not included when using publishing settings for ACC in the Revit Central File. As a Sample, a Electrical Central File is published in ACC and we don't see the Architect in ACC Viewer.

As a result:

  • The linked IFC is not visible in the ACC viewer.

  • The only workaround is to manually download the generated IFC.RVT from the IFC, upload it again as a Cloud Model, and then link it again in the cloud project.

This creates unnecessary manual steps and breaks the expected workflow.

Suggested Improvement

When an IFC is linked in a Revit Cloud Project, the automatically generated IFC.RVT should:

  • be created directly as a Cloud Model in Autodesk Construction Cloud

  • be automatically updated when the IFC link is refreshed

This would allow teams and stakeholders without Revit to correctly view the complete model, including IFC references, directly in ACC.

Such a workflow would significantly improve collaboration and support the full use.

I wish something that could have the same result for revit files that are not cloud models and just draged and droped in ACC and linked by DesktopConnector.
