Allow Legend Components in Drafting Views

Allow Legend Components in Drafting Views

Allow Legend Components to be placed in Drafting Views.
This would allow 3D families to be used as detail components and promote better coordination between modeled 3D Views and project details. Use of a legend components fails as use of a detail view since it cannot get referenced in other views and requires users to fall back to the use of "dummy tags" on viewports.

  • For example, I have a ADA toilet modeled with all of the nested shared families for grab pars, accessories, etc.
I would like to place this in a 2D drafting view to dimension (and note) a typical ADA stall in plan, and elevation that is not linked to a specific plan location. This would better support standard project details without having to place these items in plan and still coordinate geometry between 2d and 3d.
  • Another example would be signage. I would like to dimension and note a typical sign using an elevation view of a 3d sign used throughout the project.
  • Casework details would be another prime example.

Other postings have promoted the idea of allowing noting of detail components and this would tie into that idea.

The issue with standard drafting views being linked to modeled families is that if a user changes something they shouldn't in the family it would change the drafting view which might go unnoticed.

Standard drafting views should stay the same through all projects and only updated or changed if building codes or other applicable laws or industry standards change.

Also this only needs to be done once and then added to your template. Then its just a matter of placing on your sheet and you are done.

That's so "AutoCAD".

Updating detail views from model families is EXACTLY what I want.
You still have the option of drafting dumb details. Nothing stopping you. But when you want changes to be reflected throughout - you would have a proper tool.

I'm sure there are plenty of old school users still detailing off 3d families as we did pre-Autodesk (and before Legend components.). We set up a phase before Existing and New to host model elements and pull live details from there. Having Legend components available for drafting would be more elegant.

Plenty of offices are using Legend views right now as detail views. And then using the kludge of a dummy tags for the viewport because they do want to use Legend Components.

And standard details need to be reviewed for EVERY project or you are asking for trouble.

If you want to detail modeled elements then don't use drafting views, use a callout. Drafting views are specifically for doing CAD type "dumb" details.

I think what you are asking for should be an entirely different view type rather than changing something that is already established within Revit. Drafting views are for drafting, not modelling.
