Add Near Clip Offset to Framing Elevation

The Issue

When us structural people create a framing elevations its usually to show a Moment Frame or Exterior Girts. Usually when we cut a girt elevation we cut it from the outside looking in.

 

When the framing elevation tool is used It associates it self with the grid = GOOD

 

Because the cut plane is set along the grid with depth set by the Far Clip Offset, unless you cut it from the inside looking out you cant see the Girts = BAD

 

The current way to fix this is to disassociate the elevation from the grid and move it out far enough to see the girts in elevation.

 

The request

Please add a Near Clip Offset that would move the cut plane to the symbol side of the elevation.

This would allow us to keep the elevation linked to the grid (very good if the grid moves) and reduce a bunch of steps to show the girts currently

Hi Sean,

Just discovered a manual way of doing this, once you have your framing elevation in place, you need to change the Associated Datum to "none". now you are free to move the "near clip" by whatever dim you require.

Julian,  The idea is to keep it attached to the grid.  That way if the grid moves the section will move with it.  It would be nice if we could associate all sections with a plane. and offset it from that plane with a near and far offset.

 For me framing views are column line section labels and used regularly in my industry to reflect section cuts @ col line.  Usually given a title "EL @ COL LINE X" and used directly to generate elevation views at grid lines with out the added trouble of adding reference section cuts in plan views. 

 

The request as stated is essential to show proper intersecting member profiles coming in to meet the frame line from the near side.  Not every structure is a box of only exterior frames.  In many instances we have multiple interior frame lines as well.

 

This need to be added to truly reflect all elements connecting into the frame in and out.

Someone just voted for this idea (thanks shaho.b), so Autodesk sent me an email to reminded me of it. I run into this on every project. just dealing with it again now actually.

 

This idea doesn't get very much love. But it is so desperately needed.

I still really want this to be a reality, but I doubt it will happen.

 

The work around I have come up with for this issue is to use a "NAMED" reference plan at the girt line. Turns out named reference planes can host framing elevations like grids. 

 

To go one step further, I add a dimension and link it to a global parameter between the grid and the Girt line named reference plan. When the arch changes their mind on girt lines, My reference planes and girts all move in just seconds.

Yes! the framing elevation can't see my girts because they are attached to the exterior face of the columns.

A work around to this is to use Reference planes at your girt lines. The key is to "Name" Them. Its not parametric, would be much better as described, but it's the best we've got.

If this setting is available in plan views, why wouldn't it be available in an elevation view? I need this for steel framing elevation where the girts are offset from the centerline of the columns. Therefore, sag rods, centered on the girts, are not visible because they are located within the (unavailable) "near clipping offset".
