try to edit your column family > then go to properties > uncheck automatically joins geometry to walls > load again and change the existing column with new one and see if helps. thanks

Sounds like you are describing a join order thing.  Switch the switch join order between the column and wall using the Switch Join Order tool.

...or Unjoin may get you to where you want to go.  If auto join is the culprit, you can turn it off in the Family.

It is a bug which Autodesk is/should be aware of considering the fact that it has been reported repeatedly since version 2018. It happens when the Join is in a wall set to wrap at inserts (window/door/opening).

If you edit wall type and set wrapping to <none> the join should work. However, to keep the wrapping, there are a couple of options/workarounds to Fix:

  • Option 1: (Easiest) is to split the walls at the column, then disallow join and use Join Geometry Manually and the join should work as expected (See GIF below)
  • Option 2: (Not as easy) is to edit the family of the inserts and fix the Closure Planes for interior exterior (there is a previous post on this option I will try to dig it up)
