Revit 3D model export to AutoCAD

hi guys,

I know there are no layers (like AutoCAD) in Revit and that when you export the model gets the layer specified for that specific elements e.g. Generic family have "A-GENM" , columns have "S-colm" and so on.

In my case I have to create families with many different members in one family. Right now I am just giving it a color (in material browser) in Revit so that I can identify them, but I would like if there is an option so that when I export the Revit file I will get the layers of the specified material or color.

If anyone have any idea about this, or better method to do so please help!

hey,

thanks for that answer. but the problem still remains.

You see, in my revit file there are many generic families, e.g. i have created a box girder as one family, diaphragm as a other family, and cross beam in some different family. but all are generic families. the screenshot that you shared have only one option for generic family, i would like to create a separate layer for each generic family and i have so many families so when i export the file all the elements come under a single layer i.e. A-GEMN.

well thanx for the efforts. hope we get an ans for this.

I don't know your exact circumstances but if you used nested families (in snippet there is a table that is a 'Generic Model' but the nested base of the table is a Furniture family category) the embedded family WILL retain it's layer properties within the A-GEMN block. So essentially you can make a Generic Model family and place your family inside of that one. This is a pain but it is possible.

In the sceen shot provided there is the layer column. If you expand the catagory your family is in you can rename each subcategory to a new name.  I know in Navis these names come through and will identify specific objects I assigned to a subcategory in the family.

So if you have for example a piece of gear with a clearance zone. When you expand the catagory the family is in all the layers will be named the same. you can change the layer name to be clearance zone.

Not sure if this will help you in CAD but it might be worth a try.

The yellow column in the screen show you can change the name to whatever you want.

An option might be to change the category in the generic family so that they are structural elements.

@Anonymous I am doing the same thing now. nesting families and the exporting them to AutoCAD. though all families come as separate blocks still it comes under the same layer. and as you said its a painful to work on the model.

thanx for your suggestion though.

@Anonymous as you suggested, do you think it is possible to create new layers for "generic models". i wasn't able to create additional layer in model categories. model categories only have generic model option and in layers only one layer for generic model i. e. "A-GENM". I have attached a screenshot.

will you please share the steps If you can create another layer.

Thanx!

@Anonymous  Changing the model category doesn't solve the problem. as i need many families. may it be structural or generic, it will come under their specific layer like "S-COLM" or "A-GEMN".

This is what I am talking about its hard to describe. So I took some screen shots.

Most of the prep work is done in the family before export.

This workflow works for me when exporting DWG file and placing them into navis works.

I hope I am understanding what you want to do correctly and not sending you in the wrong direction.
