Revit 2018 on Windows 10 Bootcamp Print to PDF text OVERLAP issues...

Heritage_Architecture

So I have spent the last week researching a fix for this problem... I am running Revit 2018 on a 5K Mac with Windows 10 installed on Bootcamp.

I am running with the Graphics Chipset AMD Radeon R9 M395X (Bootcamp XG edition by bootcampdrivers.com), because every time I tried to run the Mac Update on the Windows side to get the Bootcamp 6.0 Graphics Drivers Update, my 3 displays would all turn off and refuse to come back online after the download reached about 50-75%.

Everything pretty much works pretty well, (except the COINS plugin I tried installing today still won't load up?) but every time I try to print a sheet to a PDF (Adobe DC, Bullzip, Cutepdf, doPDF, etc...) the font that looked so perfect and readable on my display screen becomes bloated and overlaps itself, looking as if it has scaled its width 300%, both in print preview and the generated PDF... I really am at my wits end with this one, having tried to install the Windows 7-8 visual hotfix (which won't install itself in a Windows 10 environment...) that was said to correct a similar issue in Revit 2017 to no avail... I have also tried all of the resizing options with adjusting the text scaling and resolution to thei... without any success...

Please... if anyone can find a way around this problem please please please let me know.

Thanks.

I managed to update to the latest version of windows 10 (OS Build: 16299.309) and it didn't affect the text problem.

My text is still all messed up! 😞

Hi @brendan

Sorry to hear that you are facing issues with printing.

Can you check if you have installed the recent updates for Revit 2017 and 2018 from your desktop app?

Thanks for sharing your screenshot and system specifications.

We will also require your Revit file and journal log to investigate further. I can share a private upload folder if you'd prefer.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Hi @brendan

Can you check the article by @michael.coviello and let me know if the solutions helped resolve your issue?

This issue is related to your AMD Graphics card.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Hi @Viveka_CD. I followed the steps in @michael.coviello's article and it didn't help.

  • I'm using Revit 2017.2, but I've tested 2018 and the problem is the same. I'm not seeing any updates, so I believe this is the latest version.
  • My AMD graphics card driver is: 22.19.170.1536 and when I search for updates in the Device Manager it tells me that I have the most up to date drivers.
  • I believe my Windows 10 Home is up to date as well: Version 1709, OS Build 16299.309
  • I have set my scaling in Deisplay settings to 100% for this test.
  • I created a brand new Revit file with some text and a view on a sheet and made a pdf.
  • It appears that only text created with the text tool is distorted. Text created by labels such as in the view title family prints just fine.
  • The text issue is the same whether I'm printing to PDF or printing to a physical printer.
  • I've tested a few different fonts and it seems like the text distortion is the same regardless of font.

Attached are the files you requested. I created a blank file with a bit of test text in it rather than use one of our actual projects so we wouldn't have to deal with a private upload folder or anything.

I believe the original article you were trying to look at suggested rolling back your graphics card driver if it is already up to date.

*Edit: In fact, this was indeed the trick that finally fixed the problem for me a few months ago!

@AnonymousThanks! That clue helped me fix the problem.

I just wrote out a reply and it got marked as spam, so I'm trying again with no links.

@michael.covielloyou might want to update that support article, because, at least for Bootcamp users, updating to the latest AMD drivers is not the solution.

Here's what I learned:

  • AMD Driver 22.19.170.1536 does not work (this is what I started with)
  • Rolling back to AMD Driver 15.200.1060.0 does not work
  • Installing AMD Bootcamp Driver 17.10 fails
  • Installing AMD Bootcamp Driver 15.201 works and fixes the issue!!!
  • Display scaling was a red herring for me. Now that I have the right driver, the display scaling doesn't matter and I can choose whatever scaling I like.

You will have to use google (try searching AMD Apple Boot Camp Software Graphics Drivers) to find that driver because posting the link appears to get caught in the spam filter. This is my working system now:

  • 5k iMac running Windows 10 via Bootcamp
  • AMD RADEON R9 M295X graphics card
  • Driver version: 15.201.1301.0

Downloading that specific 15.201 driver from the AMD Bootcamp drivers page was the solution. I am limited to 3840x2160 as that driver doesn't support 5k, but that's not the end of the world.

Thank you for the updates @brendan and @Anonymous

The older article has been reactivated.  The link may take some time to be 'live' and we will update based on this information.

I recommend logging a case with AMD as well (if you haven't already)

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/article/Revit-Text-overlaps-when-printing-or-print-preview-on-MAC-with-Bootcamp

We have seen occasions where rolling back the driver was not an option based on which Windows 10 updates have been installed.

I'm glad you got it working and thank you for the updated information.

@AnonymousHave you tried installing the Bootcamp AMD Drivers that fixed the problem for me? This is what worked for me: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/revit-2018-on-windows-10-bootcamp-print-to-pdf-text-issues/m-p/7876072/highlight/true#M187680

The AMD Bootcamp Drivers version 15.201 is what worked for me, but your iMac is newer than mine, so I would try both the 15.201 drivers as well as the latest ones.

This is the AMD Bootcamp Drivers page: https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/bootcamp

Revit 2017.3 and Revit 2019 are also having this issue on my machine ( We skipped 2018)

I tried changing the PDF printer.

Also we attempted to use a rolled back driver.

my machine is a 2018 iIMac Pro with Vega 56 Pro Graphics  on bootcamp

Is this an impassible error?

I loaded revit onto my surface pro 4 works WAY more efficiently. No Print problems even with the 4k screen.

@mshoffman @Anonymous I just wanted to emphasize that simply rolling back the driver one version does not seem to be working anymore. However, @brendan posted a very detailed solution where you have to uninstall your current driver and then reinstall  AMD Bootcamp Driver 15.201 (which is several versions back). Have either of you tried this?

I have had this printing issue happen twice now. The first time was back in November, and rolling back the driver one edition fixed it then. I then had it happen a few weeks ago (after @brendan posted his new solution) and his solution worked to fix it a second time for me. I haven't had anymore issues since (yet...) even though windows has updated a few times.
