Revit 2018 Material Library Crash

Revit 2018 crashes repeatedly when in the Material Editor on PCs running:

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 730

I have installed all the latest graphics drivers, windows updates as well as Revit updates and hot-fixes.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Viveka CD,

I have uploaded a screencast for you to see how the error occurs:

So I have a GTX 970 and I attempted what was shown on the screencast and I crashed as well....actually I got the "Unrecoverable Error" popup instead of an immediate crash.

I am guessing something is messed up from the sample project being upgraded over and over again...  As when I created a new asset material to replace the one that was OOTB I had no issues rotating the image.

Hi mpwushere,

I checked wither this also happens with the templates and unfortunately it also crashes. See the following screen cast:

I have had the same crash when doing what you showed in you video.  If I loaded the material into the project first, it didn't crash when editing.

Hi jcmenzel,

Yes indeed, and thank you for this good advice.

The same happened with me as shown in this screencast:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/85646a39-ea41-4770-9a91-59cdbbc724a0

This does present a workaround, but it would be good to be able to edit materials the first time around.

Kind Regards,

Hi Viveka_CD,

I am able to work around the problem but it does not solve the problem.

I found an issue last year where certain materials that have been updated release to release would cause Revit to crash.  After sending my models to Autodesk Support they were able to find the issue with just a handful of materials.  These had to be deleted and recreated in our templates and current projects.  Support did say they would try to come up with a fix for the issue, or an add-in that would do everything for me, but since I no longer work for that company I don't have access to the support ticket.

Some of my issues wound up at knowledge.autodesk.com, but that particular issue never did.  This could be it... https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles...  As I think it was the "A project template of a previous version of Revit was used in Revit 2015" was our issue and the arch example file has been around that long.

Really what I would say....don't do anything in the example files...build your own model and see if you still have the same issue.  As Wood (Oak) is not a regular named material in the library.

Posting to follow this thread.  Is there a SOLUTION?  Instead of a work-a-round?

I too have been having numerous crashes related to Materials.  While this workaround may help, it does not solve the issue.

We have a "standard" material library for our company.  When attempting to add additional items to it, Revit crashes.

The work-a-round presented does NOT fix this issue.

Thank you.

Hi bschrader_CDE

I agree, this workaround does NOT fix the issue.

@PaulFrancoisStorm and @bschrader_CDE,

Just checking....did you submit a support ticket with the models to Autodesk Support so they can try to diagnose the problem?

Remember....this is a support forum of users for users....if there is an issue submitting to the programmers will get better results than users giving you suggestions on what to try.

@Anonymous your journal file shows an API error entry for the Model Review addin.

' 0:< API_ERROR { Starting External Application: Model Review Events, Class: BIMStandardsManager.CommandEventsApp, Vendor : ADSK(Autodesk, subscription.autodesk.com), Assembly: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit Model Review 2018\ModelReview.dll }

Try disabling the addins and let us know if it helps.

I was unable to install the Revit 2018.1 update.

After formatting my PC and reinstalling Revit 2018.1 now works without crashing.

Kind Regards,

This Answer should not be marked as an "Accepted solution", much less as "Solved". Namely because:

  • Your list of to-do's will take over 3 hours to complete (you just forgot to add "back up your computer" and reinstall Windows from Setup Disks) and if you do it, you will disable useful configurations for other capacities of Revit and other software to work better, like hardware acceleration. Multiply the hours required by the number of users doing this and their hourly rates to get a dimension of what you are proposing here.
  • Because after going through the pain in that list you encounter this jewel: "A project template of a previous version of Revit was used". Are you kidding? Every project is made on a PREVIOUS version of Revit when you launch a new version.
  • More importantly because, as the patient patient Paul has shown, it doesn't work. What worked for him was installing the latest Update, that was released AFTER his original post. I wasted an hour finding this

Thanks.
