Railing Issues

Hello,

I have been trying to get my stairs to work for over a week now and finally figured out the stair run and can't get the railing to cooperate now. I am sketching my own path instead of the "place on host" method because placing on host is the most non user friendly method. It's horrible. Autodesk really needs to let the user delete segments of railing for this method without getting the "line must be continuous" error message. It enrages me.

I am trying to to run my path up multiple levels and it works fine until I have to cross an existing path to progress but I get that "line must be continuous" message and I can't go any further. However, if you use the place on host it has no problem overlapping a path. So frustrating that you can't do the same when creating your own path. I have a feeling that I must make each stair run a separate entity in order for the railing to attach to it. Make several different hosts if you will. Anyway, that is my question, how can create a multi-level custom path for my railing?

Thanks

Ok. So I tried your suggestion and it kinda works. It did place it on that run but it is hovering over the stringer for some reason not on it. Any reason it isn't touching the stringer?

Ok. It kinda works. It is not placing the railing directly on the stringer but it is on that run. Any thoughts on why it's hovering above it? Sorry for the double post. Didn't notice it went to two pages.

Edit: never mind. I realized I misunderstood after seeing your pictures.  Can you share the Revit file?

Sketch lines are projected on the work plane you set when editing the railing sketch.  They are not going to show as sloped as the stringer that you pick and that is okay.

FYI. I duplicated railing guardrail and the handrail so the changes wouldn't affect my first railing.

Can you share the updated file where you have the offset issue?  I can't replicate it on your original file.

Another issue I will need to address is to get the separate railings to transition into each other seamlessly. BTW the architect who drew up the plans sucks. So all the issues are stemming from his lack of understanding how stairs are supposed to run. I have found multiple issues with his plans during the entire process of modelling this building.

For this one you can probably do it by Place on Stair then use Split tool to make railing opening where required.  When done, you can Edit the handrail sketch (TAB to select the actual handrail > Edit Rail > Edit Path to add the Extension.

I appreciate your help but this is not what I am trying to do. My focus is on that one railing.  I was so very close with your first suggestion but I guess it just can't be done. Revit doesn't recognize the stringer when you use TAB. I believe Revit needs a different approach to sketching your own rail path and make the stringer a choice for placement, allow overlapping paths that recognize you are progressing upward. I think what I have to do is create each stair run separately.

How do you get just the staircase to show by itself like your image? Don't know how to do that.

Select the stair + railing and click the Sunglasses icon on the Option bar to Isolate category or Isolate Element, then click Section Box to crop the 3D view.

Sure it can be done.  See attached.

By the way, with your stair and level configuration, create multiple stairs or a multi-level stair is not a bad idea.

Nice! That's what I have been trying to do. Need to dissect what you did here. I am going to try the other options as well. Thanks!
