Missing Keynotes TXT file

i inherited a revit 2018 model from another architect, they have used Keynotes in the drawings but did not include the appropriate text file. is there anyway I can clean the keynotes and start new? without the original txt files I can't edit the notes.

No. But, you won't lose any that are placed either. You just can't pull new ones from the same file.  

...just to be clear, you can edit the existing tags to pull data from a different file, if that is what you meant.  Just don't smoke while doing so.

We need to be able to modify notes, spelling, directions, ETC. In my opinion this needs to improve

You cannot modify what you don't have. Ask them for the keynote file.

What would be improved?  were you provided the text file with the rvt?  if so, load it. If not, there's not much in the way of programming that can mitigate that.

No the txt file was not provided. The title of my question is “missing txt file” otherwise there would be no issue

Then you need to export a full keynote legend to excel and re-format it to create a keynote txt file.

Yes, I understand the issue. You don't have the source file from which the current keynotes were derived. So, you have several choices.  

1. Leave the current keynotes as-is.

2. Replace the current keynotes with keynote from your own file. 

3. Get the original keynote file that the current keynotes were pulled from.

That's about the size of it.  

FWIW: Keynote Manager is the simple, efficient way to edit Revit's keynote files.  I highly recommended it.

Open the list in Legends, and open Keynote Legend.

With it open, Go to File>Export>Reports>Keynote Legend.txt

The you can edit the text file, save it in the project Revit Folder and navigate to it

in the Annotate tab>Keynotes>Keynote Settings.

And Bob's your uncle.

Am I right in thinking this only works for keynotes that are already tagged somewhere?

For now, the add-in stiKeynotes.com does the trick and allows to export all keynotes (whether annotated somewhere or not) into a text file. If the text file is not there (and it is not judging from your description), there is a fallback folder.

When I downloaded and started to install https://stikeynotes.com/ I got the message:

I routinely check everything I download from the web with the anti virus app (mcaffee) installed on my machine. If that gives me a thumbs up, I use the piece. I think in this case, Windows considers an msi-file to be fishy. Best luck!

Yes, I got the same message when I tried installing the add-in with Revit running in the bg. When I restarted Revit everything worked out.
