Help with workflow on linked existing models

Hello – I was wondering if someone had a good workflow in Revit for this. I’ve searched the forums but do not see thoughts on this:
We have a project that has an existing Revit model built. We have set up several design options in the model for options the client wanted to see – both renovations and additions to the building. Now one of these options is going forward, but I’m not sure (of course) that it will be the final option that will be built. To this point we have shown just the new renovation/addition work, but now I need to demo the walls, doors, roofs, etc. that will go away in this latest option, to make it work with new renovations and addition. However, I feel this will possibly harm us later if they want to go with a different option. I realize that at that point I can just turn the demoed elements back to “existing”, but typically I’ve had to split walls, roof, and other elements where there is a transition from existing to new. We’ve experienced this on other projects, where down the road (as changes are made to new vs. existing) you end up with all these parts of walls, etc. And another factor – we want to use this “base” existing model for other projects (like a re-roof project) and not have any of the walls, etc. be demoed.
Seems like I might need multiple copies of the “existing” base model for our entire workflow?
Thanks for any help!

Link do allow you to change design options. So if you link in existing, you can change the design option with ease. So you don't need to create new file for different option. If you create new design option, you can easily change the design option in the link. Hope this simplify your workflow process

Are you saying that you are Linking the existing model into another Project? Instead of Linking the existing model - which I imagine contains much more than just the model (e.g. Views, Sheets, and much more "reusable" work) - what about adding construction phases onto the existing model/Project?  I can imagine all kinds of nightmares trying to do what you are trying to do.  I think the office’s “Curse Word Jar” would be full by Project’s completion.  😉

Thanks for the thoughts . . . I am aware of the ability to change the design options of the linked model. It is difficult to explain where I am hitting the wall in this workflow. It's useful to have a number of different design options in a linked file, but to go back to that linked file . . . it will not only have design options, but also existing and proposed phasing. And I typically find that when elements like walls are partially demolished, we have to split that wall where the demo ends and the existing remains. I try to wait to do this part until I know that option is moving forward, otherwise I end up with several "portions" of walls and even roofs for each demo "option".  Then the client says they want to go back to a different option and I have to clean it all up again. Does this make sense? I don't see any way around this except having different linked models, not design options.

Please see my reply to these thoughts, however, to your point - I am not linking an existing project with all its "stuff" (sheets, etc.) . . . . I am building the existing model and then will link just it into the production model with all its sheet, notes, etc.

You cannot Link an a Model with all it's "stuff" into another Project. That was exactly my point.
