Hi, New to Revit 2019 and mocing from AutoCAD after 20 Years. I want to creaye a 2d family with difirents types without parameters, i.e. a generic annotation family of north signs wth 10 differents types of north signs, or i.e. a family of 2d chairs that have several different types of chairs under on family . I have them all in ready in CAD, and searched the forums but didn't find an answer. Someone gave me a lead about using a lable in the family so when i dreate a new family i can define in every type which family will be included?....

Guys Tx for your insites, it's a bit frustrating spending a lot of my time to look for that simple to be answer 🙂

You can create visibility parameters for them, where the ones that you don't want to see are switched off.

I wouldn't recommend that you do that though.  It would be better to have different families for each type.  You are creating families that are more complicated than they need to be and each one has to contain all the information that is not required.  This makes the families bigger, which will ultimately slow down your project.

Hi, welcome! Coming from AutoCAD, it sounds easy to just use your CAD-files in Revit. But to be honest, I would advise against it. Revit is a fundamentally different program, therefore it would be best to also fundamentally review the way you draw.

Regarding your north signs, the generic annotation is indeed the way to go. Just open that family template and draw them within Revit. Do you have a screenshot so I can advise how to draw them?

Regarding your chairs, you are now working with a program where 2D drawing is only for view specific things like annotation, embellishing your details, etc. Meaning that when you place a 2D 'object' in plan, you won't see it in section. Creating 3D objects is the way to go, just try it!

Hi, Tx for your fast reply.

I know that the 2D furn will not appear in 3d, but these are elements that sometime i need only in 2d for conceptual design.

still i'm looking to make a family that has 10 difient types. I want to inport a new family to each type. I saw a 2D family like that by didn't figure how to reverse engineer it.

Create a new furniture family and insert all of the different chairs into it.  For each one, create a visibility parameter - click on the small grey button to the right of Visibility.  Create a new parameter.  When you load the family you can then choose which type you want to see.

So, what you want to do is use your existing CAD blocks in a Revit?  Well, I wouldn't, but you could.  Here's the rudimentary workflow using the least amount of parameters:

1. Open a New Revit Family Template.

2. Import CAD Block

3. Select CAD and click on the Associate Family Parameter Button next to Visibility under Properties .

4. Click on the New Parameter button at the bottom-left of the Associate Family Parameter dialog box

5. Enter a name that best describes what the CAD Block is, and then press OK and OK again.

6. Repeat 2 through 5 for each CAD Block import.

7.  Open the Family Types dialog box

8. To the right of Type Name, click on New Type button

9. In the New Type dialog box, enter a name that best describes which CAD Block will be visible.

10. Uncheck all but one of the Visibility Parameters. The one left checked is the one that is visible when the above Type Name (#9) is selected.

11. Repeat 8 and 10 for each CAD Block/Visibility Parameter you have.

12. Verify that each Type Name selected in the drop-down box has only one Visibility Parameter checked, and that it is the right one and only one checked.

Save and Load into Project.
