Conceptual mass glazing

I'm trying to create a conceptual mass that reflects a model for heat analysis in IES but I need to draw on the actual location of windows.

I am trying to follow this tutorial http://blendinmotion.blogspot.co.uk/2010/12/conceptual-energy-analysis-inside-revit.html however everytime I edit the surface as described but the form remains a shading surface, any ideas how to resolve this I'm sure I'm missing something simple

1.  create your overall mass as normal

2.  select the face you want to work on...it becomes the current workplane

3.  use model lines to create the shape of the window on that face.  (ensure you have checked "make surface from closed loop" and "3d snapping" as well.

4.  select the new shape you just made and change it's material properties to glazing

repeat for all windows.
