Start .ipt environment with a sketch on the XY (or any given) plane

Please forgive me if this is a simple or rudimentary task, because I thought the standard Inventor .ipt template did this but if so, someone has buggered it up here where I work.

Here is what we want: When you click on the standard .ipt template, we want the .ipt environment to open directly into a sketch on the XY (or any given) plane. Is there a simple way to achieve this, or does it need to be done via iLogic or VBA?
