Properties for custom materials

Hello,

 

We are using Inventor with various material's that are not included in the standard material library.

 

Where can I find the physical properties for these materials to add them in our custom library:

Cast Iron ASTM A48 Class 30
Cast Steel ASTM A216 GR WCB
Ductile Iron ASTM A536 GR 60-40-18
Ductile Iron ASTM A536 GR 65-45-12
Duplex Stainless Steel ASTM A-182 GR F51
Duplex Stainless Steel ASTM A240 GR F 51
LT Carbon Steel ASTM A333 GR 6

Or perhaps it already exist an oil and gas library where these are included?

 

We don't want to add new materials without having all the phyiscal properties 100% correct for the purpose of trusting mass, simulation and analysis performed within Inventor.

 

For the purpose of getting our BOM's right I understand we could simply add the material with any properties and not be so meticulous.

 

Looking forward to any ideas.

It would be awesome to get in contact with a material engineer who could help develop an open library with "all" materials within the oil and gas / petrochemical industry / process industry that we could share here on the forum.

 

I have even been in contact with our Autodesk partner company and they doesn't posses the skills to develop a library true to the list in my initial post.

 

Personally I don't know enough about materials to feel confident of filling all those property fields correct and convert the material properties I find the to the units of measurement used in the inventor material editor etc.

 

My material list is just an extract. To make the library really useful we need to add another 20-30 materials. I can share those if anyone feels confident to develop the library itself.

 

The only material customization I have done so far is to add SSAB's free library which includes a lot of specific material standards rather than the generic ones included in Inventor by default.... for everyone interested you can download it here https://www.ssab.com/support/calculators-and-tools/material-library-for-autodesk-inventor

 

It is mainly for structural steels.

 

Thoughts? Is anyone with the proper material skills interested to develop and sharing a library to all forum members?

I am curious of the list you have. We have the same issue finding all the astm materials for bolting structures. We have started praparing them. But it keeps time-consuming and a struggle!

Are you still stuck? We have been trying to devlop interface to bring materials from Teamcenter to Inventor. Teamcenter has lots of interfaces & integrations with Material libraries like granta, IMDS, ansys, MatML etc and someone would have all necessary material properties. We can check if we can get those materials into Teamcenter then we can help you create the Inventor library.

Just wanting to bring this post back up and see if anyone has seen anything come out addressing this? I dont understand how a software that does FEA does not have many basic materials already in its libraries.

@Anonymous @BK-MTFNE @bradeneuropeArthur hello guys, yes I am still stuck.

 

What we ended up doing was to create all materials with the same material properties. Meaning that I copied the standard base materials in the Inventor default library and just changed name to the materials I needed. I try to use a base material that is at least in the same family as my custom material to have weight information fairly accurate.

 

This means my drawings shows the materials we need but I can of course not any feature of the program that rely on the material properties such as strength simulations.

 

I think we need to put som effort to create a big public material library where we can create and share properly configured materials. I am not sure if we know some material engineer that can do this on free time?

 

I have more than 200 custom ASTM and EN materials that looks beautiful but all the properties are incorrect. Absolutely bullshit.

Hey @rb , I think all users who do serious projects suffer from the same problem as us. You can't just use the materials that AI makes available. I've been trying to configure my library as I need it, but there are so many standards, so many different materials that this list never ends.

I'm a user of SAE/AISI and ASTM materials, but unlike you, I don't necessarily need such reliable mechanical properties.
Could you share the ones you have with us?
