Enable replace model reference in IPN files

Enable replace model reference in IPN files

We would like to use the Replace Model Reference functionality in presentation files to replace the assembly file it is linked to.

Currently, we have to work around this issue by forcing the IPN file into the resolve link dialogue/function by logging out of Vault and deleting our local copy of the IAM.

2022 (well, almost) BUMP!

Just saw that this still isn't fixed on Inventor 2022... Here's some reference links (links inside link) I found from Autodesk: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-...

It's getting harder to find tech writers and it's becoming more engineering's problem to give work instructions. Please add this feature. Shouldn't need advanced user skills to trick the system into working for you.

If the concern from the devs that the tweaks can get messed up b/c you're not replacing things 1 to 1... Then include the above ideas of replacing components but with mapping options... i.e. you replace the reference assembly, but now the program is unsure which part is replaced with what. So have it systematically ask the user which part is replaced with which part? (I would use some sort of highlighting.) And the default option if the user doesn't have an answer is blank (meaning no tweak history, treat it as a brand new part) And once all the old parts are used up, apply the default answer to the rest. That would be so easy with highlighting each part and showing where it used to be used on the old assembly.

Example: Engine manifold. Going from 1 size to the next... all the components are all in the same locations, but the sizes are bigger/smaller and maybe hardware are different... once all parts go through the above highlight replace with routine, it's now the end users job to update the spacing etc and that could severely optimize our throughput!

I found a way to do it, but not with Inventor or Vault. The company I'm working with now uses Adept Synergis (a document management software akin to vault) and it's as simple as RMB and selecting "replace child" in that program

I used the same workaround as described in 2017, by Dan Smith.  Been using it since then and hate it.  Now we have Vault and the workaround is no longer a workaround.  Autodesk, are you EVER going to address this mess?

Even in 2022 version, this feature is still missing.

I think no one at Autodesk ever reads this posts...

I used Solidworks for 10 years anche now I have to use Inventor...is incredible how many useful functions are missing in Inventor...😣

And then we are live on Inventor 2023. Autodesk, this is still missing (for 20 years now). Why? Please answer your customers on this one 🙄

This is just one of the issues I have with Inventor. The company I'm currently working for went with Inventor 20 years ago because they had legacy Autocad files. I've been here 4 years and the frustration hasn't abated. We're biting the bullet and switching to SW. Personally, I'll realize at least a 300% increase in productivity.

Search a minor thing to realize for Autodesk. Why they don’t grab this and solve it, is sek out of rich 😞
That tiny stuff to fix, and they won’t listen.
160 users at the Office, and they are not happy about this one. And the others.

2023 and this functionality still appears to be missing from Inventor 2022

A better way of fixing this issue is to eliminate the IPN files altogether. The explode steps would reside with the model states in the assembly file. Copying a Model State would automatically copy the explode steps as well. This would also make downstream analysis easier since the user could apply loading and contact conditions to the exploded file where the surfaces would be exposed.

I completely agree! I'm used to SW which also includes auto-explode, and animate explode and collapse, as well as output the animation as a video file.

No problem to save the animation as video file. I would keep the own file format. But yes, add Replace Model Reference in IPN format

Still have the issue and I use 2023 version... Sadly it didn't reach Autodesk...
