2010 Crash

I just switched back to the ribbon because the help file references it
extensively. Now 2010 crashes randomly and there is no popup to send
information to Adesk. So I've read that the ribbon has caused problem with
2010 on some 32 bit systems. Is there any more information on a fix or a
hope of one. Should I give up on the ribbon and the help file (rather new
with Inventor)?

Rich,

If you have reproducible steps to the crashes, please let me know.
Many thanks!

The only thing reproducible so far is that I can't
remember when I had a crash before going back to the ribbon. Start there and on
my end I'll see if I can remember how to create a crash!! If it crashes again
I'll dump the ribbon again and see if things clear up.

I too had issues with the ribbon causing crashes.. I have reported them already. It was in the idw environment.

But I switched back to classic and couldn't be happier. The ribbon as it stands in 2010 is a joke. Like others have said the day they discontinue the classic interface is the day I stop paying for subscription and stay with that release for ever.

Yes I was in the IDW enviroment when it happened,
about 30 minutes in on a part with a lot of features!

Yes I might dump the ribbon but as useless as the
help file is most times you should try to use it with out the ribbon. All it
refers to is where to find the command in the ribbon and ribbon only! I'm still
at the point where I need help from time to time. They should offer a help file
that well helps and then offer another flavor with out the ribbon. Both might be
asking too much though?

Are you running a 3dConnexion device? There are some reports of crashes with Inventor and the ribbon using the latest driver. I had crashes with Inventor and AutoCAD Mechanical concurrent (both 2010) while using the 3.7.12 driver. I had to go back a driver release to solve. But since then my workstation drive failed and I've had no issues with 3.7.12 on the new rebuild of XP.

Yes with the latest driver, latest driver for video
card latest everything. The only thing that changed is me going back to the
ribbon.

Yes, We've seen this issue via the error reports. Can anyone reproduce it with 3D mouse? Edited by: qiho on Jun 18, 2009 3:17 AM

Hi Rich,

Have you tried the 3.6.11 driver with the ribbon? I want to know if Ribbon UI works well with previous 3dConnexion driver.

Thanks,
-Michael

I can't find the 3.6.11 driver as all Connexion has
is the latest. I'm not a beta tester.

Try the link in my June 5, 2009 4:24 PM posting. Or on their driver page, in step two, click "Archive (Legacy Software)".

I've run both versions of the driver and I've found no difference. The ribbon just doesn't play nice.

I really wonder how well the software is tested before being released. This is a standard setup.

Hi Rich and jpealo,

Could you recall some previous steps before the crash? For example, if editing a 2D sketch, or editing sub-assembly, or set Ribbon as "minimize to panel titles", or minimize/restore application window, if use Vault addin, doing some Ribbon UI customization, etc.

What we know is this defect will happen on a 3Dx device and Ribbon UI. Rotating 3Dx mouse will make Ribbon UI being update at times. At some time, Inventor will crash.

Any of your information will greatly help us to position this defect.

Thanks,
-Michael

I really can't point to anyone thing that causes the error as it has been different every time. You might look at constraint placements, working without saving for around 10 to 20 steps (this isn't even close to a memory issue for us). We had one crash copying a sketch from one file to another. Rotating constantly with the 3Dx device might be another.

I hope this helps.

Hi Rich,
could you please try to unload the "3DxInventor" addin in Inventor addin manager, and see whether or not Inventor will crash under the new ribbon UI?

Steps to unload "3DxInventor"
1 Launch Inventor
2 Click "Add-Ins" in "Tools" tab -> "Options" panel
3 Select "3DxInventor" addin in "Add-In Manager 2010" dialog
4 Uncheck "Loaded/Unloaded" and "Load On Startup" check boxes and click "OK"
5 Restart Inventor. Edited by: qiho on Jun 19, 2009 5:59 AM

3Dconnexion put a new driver out today. It includes Inventor stability improvements.
