BDS 2016 won't extract

Recently purchased Autodesk Building Design Suite 2016 and downloaded the 6 installation files (the .sfx.exe files).  When I go to install it on the target machine (not my machine), I get the pop-up that asks what directory to install it in.

The first time I attempted this, there was an error saying there was not enough disk space on the C: drive.  That's the only error I've ever seen with this installer though.

I cleaned up a bunch of junk and now have 40 GB free.  Tried again, now I select the directory and click OK, then after about 10-15 seconds that window disappears and nothing happens.

No error code.  No error screen.  Just, nothing.

Ran windows update just to be safe.  Rebooted several times.  No change - the installer or "extractor" seems to just not occur.  The install instructions say that running the 001_006 file should start the self-extractor, and then the installation should occur on it's own after that.  Well, that doesn't happen.

I have a second HDD on that machine so I moved the 6 files there and tried again to extract the files to the C: drive.  Nope.

Tried extracting the files to the F: drive (the space drive).  Nope.

Did I get a bad download?  Is there a checksum value that I can use to verify the 6 files downloaded properly?

I'm in the process of re-downloading all the files again.  Which is going to take 2 hours.  Maybe someone can help me out before then.  Hope so, we paid a huge chunk of change for this software and can't install it.  Never had a problem installing our 5 seats of LT.

Hello bcarlson and welcome to the Autodesk community!

It looks like you're seeing the following error message during install: "Out of disk space". The following thread should help you resolve the problem:

Out of disk space during installation to another disk drive

read all of my post you will see this is not the problem.

The target drive now has 40GB free.

The installation files are on another drive that has much more free space than that - 85GB.

I dont get the error anymore.  I only got that the first time, and it wasn't that pop-up shown in that thread.  I get nothing at all.  The pop-up windows disappears as if it was completed and then nothing happens.  Nothing is extracted to anywhere

I would recommend that you try downloading your product using the virtual assistant by following the directions here:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/account-management/software-downloads/download-method...

Please understand that some parts of the installation files are necessary to be installed on the root system drive. Shortcuts, registry settings, and profile customizations are all examples of this. However, you may be able to make some system changes that will allow you to install your Autodesk product and avoid this error. Please review my KB article for more information:

Good Luck!

In my experience, the virutal assistant is horrible.  One glitch and you have to start completely over.  With a 10.5GB download, no thank you.

Now one additional detail, the first time I downloaded the 6 files I came back to my PC after lunch and it had "recovered from an unspecified error" i.e. spontaneous reboot.  Several of the files had not finished downloading, I suspect they were corrupted and this might be the root of the problem.

I started downloading them all again, the 006 file made it but it appears that at the conclusion of one of the 2GB files, it locked up my PC again and now I suspect that the rest of the partially downloaded files might have been corrupted.

So I am now downloading one file at a time in it's entirity.  The pain is that I have to start the entire 6-file download process each time and cancel 5 of the files but I'll deal with that I guess.

In the meantime, I ran disk cleanup and freed up another 10GB of space on the C: drive of the user machine (not my machine) so now 55GB free HDD space (it's an SSD also if that matters), formatted the spare drive and switched the TEMP & TMP files over to that drive, move the Virtual drive over to that and forced it to 24GB min/max.

Tried to run the sfx again and same thing - fail (nothing happens, at all)

Generally speaking, the Virtual Agent is consistently the best option for download without errors.

What you might be experiencing is a failure to download due to a false-positive virus.  If you have a proxy, web security appliance, or anti-virus running while downloading, bypass them all.  Alternately, use the Virtual Agent as it is the most reliable.

Good Luck!

It was bad downloads.  Was able to run the sfx finally.

Another reason not to use the Virtual Assistant is if I want to install this on 5 machines, I don't want to sit thorugh 5x 10GB downloads at 2+ hrs a shot plus the chance of crashing during the d/l which seems to happen a lot, resulting in faulty installations.  Which has happened to me, many times.  One time the install was so faulty it required blowing away the OS to fix it.  I'll just stick with browser downloading.

Generally you make one download and just use that for the multiple machines.  That way you don't have to run into multiple problems.  Glad you got it up and running.
