mirrored inserted components

I am a bit stummped. I am trying to mirror an inserted component. I read a few things in the forum about copy paste (I am able to do that) but I am unable to select the pasted object to mirrot it to the other side. Not sure why this is not working. The hinges are inserted componts from another fusion imported step file.

Hi @eric_strebel,

Unfortunately, mirroring components is not yet supported in Fusion parametric designs.  See this post:  mirror-component for a workaround.  Basically, it involves mirroring the bodies inside of a component, then using Create Component From Body to make the mirrored body into a separate component.

Component mirror is one of the top items on our to-do list for Fusion, we're working on it...

Hi,

One thing I noticed is that when you pasted your new component, you created a second instance of the same component. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish with your second component, you may want to try using the "Paste New" command. I had recently made a screencast detailing the differences for another user. The link is below if you want to check it out!

I'm not entirely sure without seeing the file if the "Paste New" Command will work for what you are trying to do, but I figured I'd let you know about it.

Also, have you tried just mirroring one body at a time from your component as a work around? (Please note that in your screenshot you have the "Mirror Faces" option selected.)

Thanks,

Yes,  I actually watched the video, but I did not have the option of paste new... I was a bit baffled on that as well.

Let me know your email and I would be happy to sshare the file with you.

Thanks

Sure @eric_strebel. I'll send you a private message with my information in it. Just to check, is it okay if i make a screencast showing how I went about pasting a new component with your model to the forum after? This way everyone following the thread can see how I went about obtaining a solution.

Thanks,

That is not an issue for the screen shots

Perfect. I sent you a Private Message with my email whenever you are ready. Most likely I will have a screencast posted tomorrow morning.

Thanks,

Hi @eric_strebel,

Seems like the answer was simpler than I originally thought. In order to use the "Paste New" command you will have to break the link you have in your "Hinge Assembly v12:1" component. Let me know if you would like any more clarification on this.

Thanks,

@jeff_strater Hm that is a bummer as it is kinda a must have to be able to mirror a component I linked into the design. At what point might this be offered?

Yes, I would love to break the link to the inserted model, the link it's a pain in the ****, it's not a good work flow for me and it does not auto update.

@eric_strebel It is actually great to have that ability but I think in your case it doesnt really matter because u will never change the hinge design - so yeah instead of link just include the file in the design then you can mirror it freely.

Hi @eric_strebel,

Just wanted to check and see if my suggestion about breaking the link cleared up the issue you had with mirroring the bodies in your component? If so, let me know so I can see the finished design product. It looked really cool, and I'd love to see what it looks like finished!

Cheers,

I made a few adjustments and I am ready to do my mirror. I am unable to select the hinge assembly. I also notices that I am unable to select multiple bodies and mirror everything at once. I would like to mirror the lenses temples and hinges all on one shot if that is possible. ALso there is a little pad the the hinges will be sunk into for production. I am unable to slect that object either.Screen Shot 2015-08-12 at 4.20.11 PM.png

Yes, of course you can. You need ot press the "command" button on a mac to add objects to the selection. I assume it's the "Control" button on a PC.

Then you can mirror that selection. This has been answered many times 😉

I know that of course, LOL...

Unfortunatly, there is some sort of an issue with my model I guess. I am not able to pick more than one object at a time to mirror it. Some objects like the hinge can not be selected at all. Not sure what is going on. The update did not change anything, unfortunatly.

Looking at your file, you probably need to break the links to the components in the hinge assembly. I don't think you can mirror linked components. From a certain standpoint that also makes sense.

In general I would "outsource" the entire hinge assembly, meaning I'd build a separtae assembly and really build a functional hinge using the joints from the Assembly menu.

Then I'd insert that hing assembly as a linked component twice and use joints from the Assembly menu to create a functional assembly.

If you just want to move forward, however, you should be OK breaking the links.
