Creating a thread...

Hi Everyone:  I've attached a file that I'm having trouble with creating an internal thread.  I imported the igs into Fusion 360 and created the hole (cylinder) in the center of the part and can't get the thread feature to work.

When I select create, thread, then try to select the hole, it won't allow me to, nothing happens.

What am I missing here?

Thanks.

You'll need to convert this to a solid model.  Currently it is just faces.  @TrippyLighting may be able to give  you further guidance as I haven't worked with tSplines or iges files.

Thanks for the reply.

The igs that I imported here into Fusion 360 was a solid model in Mastercam.  Not sure why it didn't import as a solid?  I saved it as an igs, should it have been saved as a different file type?

Anybody know why it didn't import as a solid or how to fix this now so that it's a solid here in Fusion 360?

There is a cylindrical surface missing in the center that would complete all the surfaces so they cane stitched into a solid. However, that is easy to create with a loft between the upper and lower circle in the Patch workspace. Then you can simply window select all the surfaces in the viewport or shift-select in the browser and stitch them together into a solid.

Thanks for the file and information Peter.

I was able to use the thread feature and it gives me exactly what I want.

How did you go from the file that I had to get it to the solid that you finished?  I assumed it was a solid when I brought it in, so curious what you did to make it a solid?

Just as I described in my post 😉

On a side note, I wanted to move my slots.  I was able to use modify, move, faces, then I selected one of the slots and moved it inward in X by a desired amount.  I did the same thing for the other slot, everything worked fine.  But when I hover the mouse near where the slots are, the old location of the slots comes up with black lines.  Is that just showing where they were, or are they still "there"?

What I'm trying to do now is to add radii on the part.  I created a 2D arc, then trimmed it so I have just the radius.  I'm trying to move it now, but it won't move.  I tried modify, move/copy, sketch objects, move the Y axis by my desired amount, but nothing happens?

Can you bring the model in as a step file instead of an iges file?

I don't know, I can check when I'm back at work.

Thanks for the help guys.

I found it easier and helpful for the practice to create a new sketch, then extrude everything so that I have a solid (or at least I hope so).

Curious about a few things:

1)  When I create a thread in a hole, does the hole need to be the major diameter of the minor diameter before using the thread feature?

2)  Is there a way to separate just the thread from my solid?

3)  I'm assuming I have a solid, after I did my 2D sketch, I used the extrude to get the part I wanted.  When I look at the tree, I see Body1, does that mean it's a solid?

4)  If I want to save this file to import into Mastercam, how can I do that?

Thanks again guys.

1-it doesn't mater what size the hole starts off as.  the thread command will resize it according to the thread size you select.

2-not sure what you mean by separate the thread.  You can certainly create a cylinder around the threads and cut them out.  What do you want to do here?

3-you can tel by the icon, see pic

4-not sure what master cam accepts as a file format.  probably step file.  you can export from the file menu.

Thank you for the answers to my questions laughingcreek.

#2:  I was curious if I could save just the solid of the thread and export that into Mastercam?  I already created a solid in Mastercam and only wanted to bring in the threaded section.

One other thing related to what I'm trying to do.

Does anyone have a template title block other than the one that is an option when you create drawings in Fusion 360?  Looking for other options that aren't so big.  Not sure if there is anywhere to download other options?

Is this what you mean by cutting out the threads?

Yes, exactly what I was interested in, thank you.

Any thoughts about title block templates?  Still having trouble with finding one that is downloadable and simple.

There are a few threads on title blocks, like this one

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/minimal-title-block/m-p/7527073#M139884

I remember several posts in the past detailing making custom title blocks and other issues.  Do a search and see what you find.  I haven't  kept up with thispart of fusion, so I'm not going to be much help.

Nice job laughingcreek, that is a simple one and far better than the template available in Fusion 360.  I'll use that one for now, but curious about another one that I saw on the forum.

I'd prefer something like the one in post #7 of this thread:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/how-to-import-drawing-template-into-fusion...

I like the one in post #7 because it has a tolerance box and the ability to insert a picture.  Looking for something like that one, not sure if anyone has something similar or if that one is downloadable?

I tried separating the threads like you did in the video, but I can't get it to work.  I've attached my file, what am I missing?  When I extrude, I'm left with the thread and the pocket?  How do I separate the thread from the pocket?

Did you have the extrude type set to "intersect"?

But I'm going to switch gears on you.  It occurs to me that you will want to keep the rest of the part (above technique deletes everything else), so try this screen cast.  Here I used the split body tool instead of extrude.   Also attached resulting file.
