bosses move/remove from a irregular curved convex/concave surface

For an existing Fusion 360 project, I need to move or remove a number of support bosses used for mounting and fastening that protrude from an irregular curved convex/concave surface. Fusion is down at the moment or I would upload a visual example.

The History on the Timeline has been removed at this point along the work-flow.

The components need to move in to CNC production by the end of the week. There are a number of posts in the IdeaStation, mostly to extrude from the irregular surfaces. If you combine all of the request related to this feature request and its applications, there seems to be a lot of support for it.

Extruding Offset from Surface

Add "to next" option for extrude extents

Enable 'Between' Termination Option in Extrude/Press Pull

While we wait, does anyone have a work around for this that would help???

Without seeing what you're working with it's hard to say but have you tried selecting all the surfaces that make the boss and delete or move. If you are using direct modeling Fusion can heal models quite well after a delete, you need to be in the model workspace though, in the patch workspace Fusion just deletes the surfaces and leaves a hole. I've modified quite a few step files removing all the fillets and holes so I can use the parts in the CAM workspace to make electrodes for EDM.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the very constructive input!

I just jumped back in to Fusion and tried your suggestion with a simple shelled sphere cut in half and protruding boss with a fillet and time-line removed. It works nicely. Fusion removed the boss and as you mentioned healed the remaining convex/concave surfaces automatically. When trying to move it, the entire body sphere and boss was selected. While in the direct modeling, I added a new boss through both upper and inner surfaces of the “cup” and found that I was able to move it as you said. For others: 1) it moved the outer boss without affecting inner half of the boss, 2) the boss re-sized and adjusted its shaped to match the surface contour as it was moved.

I am about to have machined a prototype that I invented, using the CNC process instead of 3D printing and need to modify the components before they can start fabricating.

Your application for Fusion sounds interesting.

Again, thank you for pickup my post in the forum and helping me and others benefit from your experience. Much appreciated!

Regards,

Kevin

The most effective way of getting a problem resolution is either a screenshot, perhaps a screencast or even sharing your design and there are several ways to do that including only sharing it with particular people.

Additional Notes:

For a boss with a through hole, make sure that you select the hole. Delete the hole if you want to move only the upper half of a boss that extends in above and below a face, select and move the boss. After you have to recreate the hole.

A protruding boss can only be selected separately from the body (if joined when extruding) and moved if it is created after the Time-line is removed.

With Timeline Removed

Option to Move Faces is available in the Move dialogue box. In the Move dialogue box select Object: Move Faces. Then select the faces of the boss. Then move the boss.

To move a boss with a center through hole. Delete the center through hole first, by selecting it, R-Click → Delete. Move the boss and then R-Click → Move
