Where the Temporary Dimensions pick to dimension from is set under the Manage tab then go to Annotations and slide through to get to Temporary Dimensions.
That will bring up the dialog box where you an set your locations options for Walls and also Doors and Windows.
As for the size of the dimensions, that can be set larger under Options. Go to the Graphics section and look for Temporary dimension text appearance and there set the Size: different than the original 8 setting. Changing the Background: to Opaque helps them to show up better also.
This is a little better to read.
