Phases can be set for more than Existing and New. They can also have a past.So how about a look way back in the past? Let's call it a pre-historic phase. Let me take you back, way back.
My company uses a template based on the Parallax Team template. Our template has some prehistoric phases. These phases allow us to have live legend views that are actual plan views. We do not have to utilize linework, fake callouts, or overriding linework for elements in our legends. This way, any changes to families used in a legend are automatically updated if a family changes. We show existing, demo, and new elements in our legend views. Even though they are live and not linework, none of these elements appear in our schedules.
Here is a look at our phases:
Most of the elements in our legend views go into the _Legends_New Work phase. If we need something to show as existing, it gets placed in the _Legends_Existing phase. Elements that need to show as being demolished can be set in the _Legends_Existing phase and demolished in the _Legends_New Work phase. It is essential to have all elements demolished before our Existing phase, which is what the _Legend_Demolition phase is for. This removes elements before our projects are created.
Phase 2 can be used to lay out future options. Another point about our phases is to note the Description section of the Phasing dialog box. This makes it very clear as to what each phase is used for. All of our phased views for floor plans are under the category 00.2—Floor Plan—Legend Views, which allows us to close them down in the browser. We have similar views set up for RCP and Area views. The Legend (Annotation Phase)- __Floor Plan- All Views view allows all elements in legend views to be simultaneously seen. The only thing that can’t be seen is any annotation placed in the individual legend views. This makes it easy to check on model elements for their phase settings or find elements within our legend views simultaneously. This view has a scope box off to the side where projects will not be built. All other views have a crop region to set their view size.
This would be an excellent idea for those who put all those wall samples off to the side of their projects so they won’t get purged. Put them in a phase before your project, then demolish them in a second phase before your project’s phase. I know that it always bugged me to have all those walls showing up in a project when I was working in another job that was a subcontractor.
Phase Filters in our template are slightly more developed than the default template:
Show Complete, Show Demo (Only), Show Demo + New, and Show Temporary (Only) have been added. These may not be assigned to a view template, but they are available should the designer need to view those phases as shown.
Our Graphic Overrides have settings changed from the original as well.
Line color and lineweight have been set for Projection/Surface and Cut. The 00-DEMOLITION material has been assigned to anything that has been demolished.
These live legend views make tagging items such as walls and doors easier. The details of the elements in the legend can match the working view precisely because it can have the same view template assigned. Sections and other view types can be set up and placed on a sheet to show how they will appear in a view. That sheet holding all views called from the legend views is set to not show in the sheet schedule. Annotation is just as easy as working in any other plan view.
I hope this gives you some ideas for your template development.
