Maintaining VPFreeze when copying viewports

Maintaining VPFreeze when copying viewports

Often on my layout tab I'll have more than one viewport when showing sequential slender areas such as a river or a roads. And I often put a key map on each of my layout tabs. When copying a viewport within a drawing such as the keymap viewport I have to go through and lay freeze everything within the copied viewport again, because all the layers defaulted to being thawed. I feel as though the default should be to have the VPFreeze layers and viewport overrides be mimicked from the original to the copied viewport, not be default thaw all layers and restoring viewport overrides. It is much easier to clear viewport overrrides and thaw all layers then it is to select certain layers and change attributes and/or freeze them.

This would be a huge time saver.

Within the same viewport, match properties works. I would love to be able to use that command over multiple drawings or even layout tabs within the same drawing. For Keymaps; I may be missing something, but I typically create a key map as a block to copy from drawing to drawing. I then add a frame to highlight the appropriate area shown on each sheet.

Jeffl - I am familiar with match prop, love it! Over multiple drawings might be asking for me bit much, but I think within the same drawing is definitely doable.

For key maps, hmm I haven't of that. Not a huge fan of drawing in paper space and I have several basemaps xref'd into the drawing that are good for orienting the viewer to the area within the site. Always down to try new things though, so thanks for the idea.

Layer states is another way to accomplish this, I use them to great effect across sheet sets.

@darrell.kennedy, I voted for this because I agree that maintaining VPFreeze status is the expected and desired result. As a work around, I agree with @jacob.dwyer that layer states are useful.

That said, your are suggesting an improvement to a core AutoCAD functionality, not a Civil 3D functionality.

This is a forum for Civil 3D Ideas. It is very unlikely that the core AutoCAD team will ever see this thread, much less react or respond to it. I have been told by active, respected forum participants, with high badge levels, that the Civil 3D Ideas Forum is monitored by the Civil 3D team; I will accept this on faith as I have seen absolutely no evidence of any monitoring over the last several years.

Your idea is better suited to the nonexistent core AutoCAD Ideas Forum.

Unfortunately, ADESK chooses to depend on the external AUGI Wish List (https://www.augi.com/wish-list) for AutoCAD ideas. I find the AUGI Wish List system to be unnecessarily complicated, at best.

Alternately, you can you can post an idea in the ADESK Product Feedback page. (https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback)

I have been told that all feedback posts are at least read by an Autodesker.

You can make the VP a block, then insert it, explode, and the layers will be set the same.
