AutoCAD LT - Duplicate definition of block ignored

This is the message I get:

Command: Duplicate definition of block brace ignored.
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [hsimplex.shx].
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [hsimplex.shx].

I have one drawing open, and my Design Centre open on the 'Open Drawings' tab and I'm trying to drag a block from there into my drawing but keep getting this message.

It works fine for other drawings (dragging a block 'into its own drawing') so I can't work out what the problem is.

That message means there is already a block in that drawing with that name.

Use PURGE to get rid of the block and then the duplicate message will disappear

The substituting message appears because it cannot find the hsimplex file so it's using simplex instead

I've tried that without success.

There is a block in there with that name, but it's the same block. I'm just try to drag an instance of it from the design centre.

As I and you have just said there is already a block in that drawing.

If there is already a block in there and you drag from design centre you will get that message.

Is the block your dragging an updated block? If so just right click on the block and choose REDEFINE.

In your file, rename the block BRACE to something else then try to insert it again, see what happens.

Your file may be corrupt then or has been touched by a vertical version of AutoCAD: fix it with these methods

Same to me: copy to clipboard a block from a drawing and paste to another drawing is giving me:

Command: _pasteclip Duplicate definition of block _ArchTick ignored.
Duplicate definition of block STUB-DOWN ignored.

The block name is STUB-DOWN and it has nothing to do with _ArchTick.

I figured that if I copy a nonannotative block and paste into a drawing where the block is defined annotative, doesn't work.

This is probably on 'wish list'.

_ARCHTICK is a dimension block which cannot be deleted unless you remove the dimension style from your drawing.

The block name is STUB-DOWN and it has nothing to do with _ArchTick.

Upload your source file and we will see.

I figured that if I copy an annotative block and paste into a drawing where the block is defined nonannotative, doesn't work.

If you mean paste from clipboard (ctrl+v) it is normal because the BLOCK is nonannotative.

Copy&Paste copy only your Blockreference, not your Block(definition).

If you want to use the new (other) Blockdefinition you have to re-define the Block in target file.

For example with DC (Designcenter), open sourcefile, choose your Block and right-mouse-click for contextmenu ->

Try checking the layer of the block you are pasting. It might have been 'off'.

Sorry in advance for sharing my frustration with this, but I've been working with CAD for over 10 years and all blocks gave me are conflicts, errors and crashes, and in 2019 they are still as useless and a nuisance to me. Anyway, I just want to paste some lines, it should not be that hard. 

My drawings that I want to paste are made up of hundreds of blocks and I can't rename hundreds of blocks (no batch rename option), this is useless. Anybody know a practical way to do this?

You would be much better off starting a new thread, so people aren't reading through all the comments here, to find out it has nothing to do with your question.

And explain exactly what your problem is, if possible with example dwg files and screenshots to explain the situation. For example, how does wanting to paste 'lines' have anything to do with renaming blocks?

I couldn't even imagine not being able to work without blocks and still be productive. 

Why haven't you learned how to address these issues and use them properly?

A new thread on the same error message I thought would not go well. 

Anyway, here is the simplest example I have: in the copy screencast I have these lines that I created in layers that I created, no blocks. In the paste screencast I try to paste those lines in a received file that contains blocks and it doesn't paste anything while giving me those "duplicate definition.." messages.

Also, if I try pasting the received drawing (with blocks) in a fresh file it just doesn't paste anything, no messages in the command line.

You have given us a jpg image of a screencast why not the link to the screencast so we can watch it? We really need to see the dwg files to see what is going on, a line doesn't have a block definition. So it sounds as though you are selecting blocks. And yes a new post is important because although you may get the same error, the OP was talking about using Design Centre to insert blocks and your problem isn't caused by that scenario so it just gets confusing when trying to read back through this post, any suggestions made earlier just don't relate to your problem.
