Text vertical not horizontal as required

Hi, 

I am using AutoCAD LT 2012 but I imagine this will not matter. I have a template perfectly set up for our company in Imperial measurements. I have just recently tried to create an exact copy of the template and switch everything to metric. I believe I was successful in doing this however I have one issue that I can not resolve. For some reason, now all of my text including numbers within dimensions are appearing vertically. I have gone through the style manager on both templates several times with a fine tooth comb and can not find one difference that would cause this. I have tried selecting all the options to make text appear differently and nothing solved my issue. 

If anybody knows what is going on and can help me it would be greatly appreciated!

It would be helpful if you could give example files so that I can try to work on it on my system. It also gives the other users a better idea of how to best address your questions.

Both of your files' layout look identical: can you post a screenshot of this "vertical text" that you see on your end?

anything new that I create is vertical. I attached a screen shot to show you what is happening.

actually since I just did that, for whatever reason, I just noticed that the vertical text is only happening when I try placing it on "model" space. In the layout paperspace it is appearing as it should.

Look at your UCS, it's rotated. have nothing to do with your metric conversion.

PS: that is not text, that's dimension text: two different object types.
Or are you drawing two lines, placing two arrows, then manually writing 'text" in between the lines?

Wow I had not noticed that at all. That must be the culprit however I have absolutely no idea why that would happen when I made a direct copy from a template that was working fine. 

I tried messing around with it to try to fix it and could not figure it out. Could you please explain to me how to fix this AND make sure it matches the layout UCS? They appear to have independent UCS's.

also...i realize the texts are different. I meant to say that any text written would appear vertical whether it was dimension text or just regular text.

hi again, 

This has become incredibly frustrating. After playing around it looked like I may have fixed the issue. I got the UCS to appear properly but for some reason when I switch between the layouts, it gets messed back up again. Even stranger is that when I switch between the layouts and see that it is wrong, all i have to do is zoom in one mouse scroll click and then back out and the UCS changes itself. 

Is there some ridiculous glitch happening here? If so, am I stuck with my one template forever now?

UCS command and hit the view option. It will do the job in model and layout.

Unlock your viewport.
Set UCS to WORLD
Set PLAN to WORLD
reset your viewport scale, viewport location at modelspace, lock it back up.

Repeat in modelspace and other layouts. Now your METRIC file is exactly like your IMPERIAL file. YOu just lost track of a lot more than just scaling.

That fixed everything. I have no idea what could have been happening or why it happened when all I need was create a copy of my template but its fixed now!

Hi again....

I know ive already accepted a response as a solution but I really hope I can still get a response on this. It turns out that actually didnt work. It worked right away, so i saved my template, opened it back up, checked it, and it was fine. Now today for some reason its doing the same thing seen in my screen cast. What is happening?!

1. Are you sure you opened the correct file, and not a replacement?
2. Are you sure you don't have a startup or add-on doing this for you?

Nothing, absolutely nothing in plain AutoCAD out-of-the-box will flip UCS and PLAN variables like that all on it's own. You are overlooking something. Dig a little deeper, find out.

thank you very much for continuing this conversation. I am sure I am opening the corrected file. I wouldn't know if I have any startup or add-on. I have never set that up or even know what that is so I doubt it. 

please see the attached template. If you could please save this as a template on your machine and open and close it a couple times after correcting it I would really appreciate it. After fixing it, it wont even stay corrected after saving it again and I am still experiencing the strange issue of the UCS changing from simply zooming into the template as seen in my screen cast.

I'm going to guess you are making this mistake:
- You change the settings in the DWT file.
- You reopen the DWT file and it's no changed.
- You skip the part where the DWT file needs to be a DWG file, you make and save changes to it first, then replace the old DWT file with the altered DWG file (and rename the extension DWT).

OR... you are still accessing the old DWT file when you use the default 'template' option in AUtoCAD which is disregarding any new templates you created.

Which is it? Attached is your file, I changed the DWT to DWG, made the changes, saved the file, changed it back to DWT. Opened it several times last night and this morning and miraculously it's still the same way I set it and NOT the way you had it.

Well that changes things! I had no idea I needed to save the .dwt as a .dwg somewhere else first, make the changes, then save that file back as a .dwt!

That alone however I do not believe solved it for me. I think I have it all fixed now but I noticed something strange happening when I was fixing it. For some reason, my model tab, and LAYOUT tab seemed to be linked properly but my PORTRAIT tab would not work. The PORTRAIT tab would stay in the wrong UCS orientation even when I typed in UCS--> World. So when I decided to command UCS--> Plan, it changed my PORTRAIT tabs UCS to the correct position but then my model and LAYOUT would get messed up and vice versa. 

In my frustration i decided to delete the PORTRAIT tab, make a copy of my LAYOUT tab, and modify the page to be like the previous portrait tab. This actually seemed to fix the issue and now I've opened it a bunch of times even closing the program first, and it seems to work. I couldnt tell you what was happening but I think its all fixed now! I really appreciate the help!
