Hi,

what cache do you mean? AutoCAD (Vanilla) does not have a cache.

AutoCAD only creates some temporary files, they are placed by default in the user's temp folder (%TEMP%) as long as it is not changed in the settings (command _OPTIONS, tab Files)

I'm talking about this type of cache - due to layout regen options (picture
below)
I know that you can turn it off - but question is - how to delete it
without turning off autocad.

Hi,

Well, afaik that is only built in memory, not as files on the harddisk.

I would not know a way to force AutoCAD to free that resource in the memory. Just as a guess: this cache is built for loaded files, closing the file should make the memory for that file clean.

What issues do you have that you know how it can be turned off, but you don't want to turn it off, instead you want to clean this cache? What thoughts are behind that idea?

Hi @Anonymous,

Are you seeing any problems in AutoCAD that make you want to adjust the memory tuning?  It is possible to clear the cache by setting it to 0 temporarily as discussed in this article.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Kudos,

Setting to 0 doesn't clear cache - it stops caching (but if there is some
cache already - it doesn't delete it).

Turning off takes bit of time.
So I thought there is more efficient way.

Hi @Anonymous,

You are correct, but as the article indicates, the files are stored at \AppData\Local\Autodesk\. . . folder under GraphicsCache and can be deleted.

It is safest to just restart AutoCAD: deleting cache files while the program is running may lead to unexpected behaviors.

May I ask why this is a concern or need? Or do you keep AutoCAD up and running 24/7?
What version of AUtoCAD?
Windows version is what?

I have many layouts.
So cache expands quite fast - 1-2 hours - and then I need to restart
drawing.
i thought that there similar (as regenerate.) function to delete cache.

HI @Anonymous,

Perhaps you should invest in some more hardware. What is your current configuration?

No, that's not how it works.

What are your PC specs? RAm, HD free space, Video Card?
How large are your DWG files? How many layouts and Xrefs in each file?

32,0 GB of ram.
Ram - is main component for cache 🙂

Free HD - 800 GB. (Yes 800).

Two files 19MB each and 4-5 files 2MB each.

Files with 19MB - has approx 20 layouts each.

Files with 19mb - has 4 xrefs each (but they are unloaded)

Thanks for all the info: so you find your system slows down significantly? With lower spec hardware but same size files I cannot say I need to restart AutoCAD after 1-2 hours to speed things up. Do you manually save often during those 1-2 hours? Or are you relying on good karma to hold a file 1-2hours before saving?

Do you by chance have other background apps (or unnecessary loaded system apps) running that just need to be turned off?

Hi,

of course there is background apps 🙂
It sloves down due to many layout which I'm using constantly - so cache is
getting bigger and bigger and after 2 hours I need to restart it.
So I was looking - faster way to clean cache.

Hi,

>> after 2 hours I need to restart it.

That's normal for me, I never have AutoCAD longer open than max 3 hours.

What makes you sure that it's the layout cache that slows you down?

Hello

+1 With Alfred !

No more than 1-3 H With the same DWG (Depending on its size ?!)...

I am using 2D GIS DWGs (50-300 Mb) on PCs with 32 Mb Ram: no serious problem !

Try this macro

^C^CCACHEMAXFILES;0;CACHEMAXFILES;256;CACHEMAXTOTALSIZE;0;CACHEMAXTOTALSIZE;1024;

This should reset the cache with out closing and restarting Autocad, had the same issue. This fixed the problem for me.
