PBR Viewport Shader/Environment

PBR Viewport Shader/Environment

Unfortunately, when Nitrous was introduced it effectively 'broke' the 2 best viewport shaders available - 3pointshader and Xiolul - for displaying real-time/game assets.

I would like to see a native Nitrous shader aimed squarely at UE4/Unity look-dev(similar to what Modo recently introduced) Possibly a real-time environment mode in the viewport with .HDR lighting. And whereas the above mentioned shaders were previous-gen tech(diffuse/Spec) this would obviously be built for metal/rough PBR

I realise this can be set up using ShaderFX/Stingray but I find the SFX results to be pretty terrible.

In my experience Maya Viewport 2.0 isn't that much more feature rich than Nitrous, and it is certainly is not that performant in regards to raw polygon data that it can handle, nor can it handle more complex lighting situations like Nitrous can, nor is it anywhere near as accurate with lighting values vs what you see in the renderer.  Though I will admit that I like how it can do DX style rendering in its viewport.

I think you might be better off revising this request to ask for the feature(s) that are missing in 3DS Max Nitrous vs Maya Viewport 2.0. Otherwise I am not sure how much support you will get for a request like this.

I think they are both based on the same technology, OGS - One Graphics System.

If they are, they are still a bit different as Maya is using OpenGL for its viewport while 3DSMax is primarily using DX11, so slightly different and not quite a copy and paste job sadly to move features from one to the other.

But with all that said the theory is theory and this idea just needs a list of the features from Viewport 2.0 in Maya that are not in 3DS Max to be flushed out and get some good discussion and community support.

Agreed. The initial post doesn`t make much sense and should be interpreted as:  How to improve 3dsmax Nitrous Viewport.
Luckily we already have such an idea.

I can't change the name of the post. Maya viewport 2.0 is objectify better. I wish there was an option to use it instead of Nitrous

Autodesk - Download these with internet download manager for reference -  quickly scrub through them. See how the Maya viewport is so much better than 3ds max?.

In my opinion the Nitrous Viewport is the worst of all the major 3D packages - its actually terrible. I dont care what version of direct X it uses.

Look at hair grooming with XGen - Download these for reference too.

Please - Autodesk already has an amazing view-port render engine....just plug it into 3ds max. We cant wait for you to 'fix' the Nitrous Viewport. Either make Nitrous better than 2.0 or just use 2.0.

A number of big companies that make plugins for 3ds max have told me that the 3ds max viewport is a huge problem because its so bad. Also a huge majority of hair grooming artists use Maya because of XGen + VP2.0

Kind Regards
Steve

The 3ds max viewport is the worst out of all the major 3d packages. Nitrous is so, so bad. Please Autodesk, make a better viewport for 3ds max.

I asked AUtodesk to just plug the Maya viewport 2.0 into 3ds max because its already been developed and is probably the best view-port available for 3d modelling. Maybe they could plug in maya viewport 2.0 by the next 3ds max version which will help us wait out the 5-10 years it will take them to code a PBR viewport.

Just think of how little 3ds max has improved in the last 10 years of 3ds max.....come on Autodesk ! - don't say you are committed to quality, you show that you are committed to quality. I wish you good luck making a better viewport for 3ds max. 🙂 !

Nitrous is the ugliest view-port ever made. Its actually worse than the previous view-port. Super ugly for everything.

While you take the time to implement some better solution - is it possible for you to quickly port maya's view-port 2.0 into 3ds max? 2.0 is already very, very good and its already made - cant you just plug that that in while you make the above mentioned PBR view-port?

Also the viewport 2.0 can be used for hair groom artists like me who use Ornatrix. Maya viewport 2.0 is stunning to work with XGen and Ornatrix. Such an implimentation may even pave the way for the posibility of plugging XGen into 3ds max! - Please, this sounds like a really great solution while you take the time to build the PBR viewport.

Nitrouse is the most pure diarrhea ever made. Also, hurry up with development - your soooo slow! - You're getting beaten by Blender.....which is for free lol

Yes, please. Grooming in 3ds Max is a terrible experience

Maya Viewport 2.0 is worse than Max, we don't need a bad feature from Maya,

Max needs EEVEE, a modern PBR viewport with realtime postprocess like Unreal or Unity.

With that said it feels like there are two sets of confused requests going on here. Maya Viewport 2.0 style rendering, and improved hair grooming.

Viewport 2.0 is a rendering technology, how the data is visualized in the display. It is not a hair grooming technology, this functionality is based on the hair tech (which would be great to see from Maya in 3DS Max), and as such requests for the hair grooming should probably be made as a specific request if one does not exist.

With that said, I agree with Xerges that Max could certainly benefit from a PBR style viewport renderer, but this is not something that Maya Viewport 2.0 does to my knowledge, nor is this something that is outlined in this particular idea request. As such I would respectfully ask that the author update his request to be more clear in what they are asking for. Do they want PBR style viewports or do they want an updated hair system with the ability to groom in the viewport (which based on what I have seen in this thread is what the author is actually after).

I'm sorry @loganfoster - I cant find where to update the original post - Can an Admin help me so I can update the post to clearly explain my suggestion.

I WANT TO UPDATE THIS POST AS SEEN BELOW.

TITLE: PBR Viewport for 3ds Max

SUGGESTION: Please Implement a PBR View-port for 3ds max. - (Something in the order of Substance Painter for example).

Hi @Wolf-Man

instead of renaming the topic, would it make sense to merge this (along with it's unique votes) into https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-ideas/pbr-viewport-shader-environment/idi-p/6806116
?

a game engine viewport would bring 3ds max into the next level of modelling and production.

At least within my field means skipping rendering process.

This is like if someone tells you that you don't need to put petrol in your car, pay insurance or parking tickets all in once.

?

Less hours of work, less stress, more freedom, faster iteration with clients, etc..

No need for apologies, happy to hear that this is something that more people are interested in seeing implemented.?

Yes just merge it.
