Weld threshold removed from symmetry in 2022?

This seems like a really strange thing to remove. What's the solution for that now? It's making a huge mess of my verts.

I'm sorry that I can't persuade you to become part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

Is there a hotfix for this ? By the way the whole welding-slicing from the symmetry is inconsistent. I am working in meters and I encountered errors at 0.1 dm, 0.01 cm and 0.001 mm of course. I scale objects at a subobject level to 1000 then scale them down in respect to the pivot of the object.   I am working in architecture on covings and  friezes with a lot of loops and it has been really bad. I always have detail up to 1- 2 mm for whatever is close up in renders and animations and it is very annoying. I don't have a choice to change the scale because there are other bugs when you load a square km in millimeters.  I like the cleaning of the UI but that is a big issue.

No hotfix at the moment, unfortunately. I too am struggling with this (and scaling was not a viable option ether) and so went back to Max 2021 for general use for now.

You can sort-of work around it by manually splitting and symmetrising (without split along mirror option turned on). I made a post about it earlier in the thread  here. Unfortunately won't work in all situations, but might be useful.

Thank you @blakerobinson

Yes i am trying the slice method. Slice also fixes imported models from rhino and sketchup. The modifier I never used is our best friend now.

These are really arcane methods no wonder young designers avoid 3DS MAX, all the market around me is using rhino and sketchup to design nowadays. It would have been a piece of cake for Autodesk and Max to have all this market share.

Here's a video from my side.  I would really prefer to have the option back, as the algorithm is still bugged.   And even if the algorithm is fixed, the option to still use it, would be great.

This is totally ridiculous the "threshold vertex weld" is fundamental for little vertex distances! OMG!!!!

Just bumped into this after a quick Google search and am pretty shocked the feature was removed. Glad it's going back in.

Thanks for the temp work arounds folks!

Unfortunately, even though 'Weld Threshold' has been added back in, this problem is not fixed (as I mentioned a few times now, it's not caused by the Weld part of Symmetry, it's caused by the Slice part).

2022's new symmetry modifier is still welding vertices that are close together along the slice plane, regardless of what Weld Threshold is set to (unless Slice along Mirror is turned off, which makes Symmetry useless for symmetrical modelling). The slice/symmetry work around still sort of works, but Slice doesn't behave exactly the same.

Would love to get this feature fixed because we're going on almost 3 months after release now and a core feature of 3dsmax for games-related 3d modelling that's change was unnecessarily still doesn't work.

Here is one more example of issue with symmetry modifier; I have a small chamfer alongside one edge that get's welded together even if "weld seam" option is turned off.  And this object needs to be turbosmoothed afterwards. I don't need to explain a mess that will make.
This makes working with symmetrical objects that have small details almost impossible.

We have some updates and improvements on this in the beta. Please let me know if you would like to have an invite to try it out.

It's still broken in 2022.2, unfortunately. Using symmetry on small objects now creates small holes/gaps in the seam:

Problems with Symmetry have been going on what, 5 months now? Can you just put the old symmetry back in again until the team can actually fix this? The new multi-axis features are completely useless if the basic functionality of symmetry is not working.

At this point I'd even be happy with an added 'Legacy symmetry' modifier that is just the symmetry modifier from 2021.

Do you mean 2022.1? Because that certainly isn't the behavior in what's fixed in beta.

You can get that with old symmetry modifier also.

I'm sure you can get all kind of troubles with other things since you insisting on that kind of workflow.

Similar things must be a reason to "repair" old symmetry in first place.

Does the proximity weld work for others in 2022.2 ?

I can't get "non slice pair" vertices to weld (e.g. for a quick and dirty cleanup) no matter how high I put the treshhold.

Alternatively, it would be nice if the sliced edges or the vertices of the slice/weld were passed up the stack as a selection so they can be processed further automatically. I can use open edges in case of an unwelded slice, but there is no guarantee there won't be other open edges.

Additionally, the slicer still messes with hidden edges outside of the ones the slice plane cuts. Probably because it considers the whole polygon, which does make sense for editable poly, but naturally, it won't always find the best solution when retriangulating bigger polygons.

Extreme example to illustrate the problem in the attached picture.

I am a very long time user of 3dsmax and I dare say I am one of the top 3dsmax modelers in the world: https://www.artstation.com/occultart. But if this is not fixed with a Hotfix before the end of the year when my perpetual maintenance license expires, I will be migrating to Blender. I have always been a vocal proponent of 3dsmax, but this problem makes 2022 and 2022.2 unusable for me. (I have not even installed or activated 2022 because of this problem) Have you introduced this bug/problem deliberately or something?

Please bring out a hotfix as soon as possible or just release the old version of the symmetry modifier so i can replace the new one with the working old version.

Is there somewhere online where I can report critical bugs? Because this is a critical bug as far as I am concerned.

Did you test 2022.2? It is fixed, and if you turn on Use Proximity Weld, it should use older version algorithm. If something is still not working, please send files to dev.

Also if you have not jointed beta, please join.

"non slice pair" vertices to weld is working for me. Did you make a fresh new Symmetry modifier or using old file?

I have not used 3dsmax 2022 or 2022.2 because of this implied problem. Do you say that the complaints in this thread about 2022.2 still not working properly are unfounded? The comments in this thread imply that the slicing part of the symmetry modifier still gives unwanted results/problems. The welding part seems fixed. Thanks!
