Show shaded mat in viewport button makes objects invisible

This happens a lot for me to. Very annoying. I first noticed this in max 2018 but it happens in 2017 also when I checked. To be able to see the textures when this happens i have to change the shading mode to facets instead of default shading.

To fix this I try starting up more max instances until one of them suddenly works. Or close max, delete the enu folder, start max again, open a scene to check if everything is fine which it usually is. Close max again. Then delete the enu folder and use my copied enu folder with all my settings instead and start max again. This works sometimes but not always.

I encounter this several times a week or even per day sometimes.

I never had this kind of problems before. But now om on new hardware and win 10 instead of win 7. Maybe win 10 and max does not work so great?

I have the same problem on both of my computers. They have identical hardware and operating systems though. Soon I will get a new laptop, it will be interesting to see if the same problem occurs on that.

We deleted this file and it worked perfectly.  But then after a reboot of the machine and opening the file back up it went back to invisible geometry.  deleted the "maxFxoCache" and it went back to working.  Our 3D team has to delete this file about 5 times a day which is very annoying.  We have re-installed max and same thing.

Hmmm.  I don't think there's anything about normal rebooting that would change a file unless maybe your IT department has some kind of 'Deep Freeze' or similar program or maybe Windows is restoring a profile on load?  I'm out of my element with that particular topic however, it's not my area.

But if it takes a reboot to cause the problem, it stands to reason that something about that reboot is part of the problem so it sort of points to Windows or some kind of backup software maybe.  Perhaps your profile is loaded off the network?  So you make local changes, but on reboot it loads the profile again off a network machine?  (Or something.)   I'm totally guessing here.

Thanks for the information! Are you student working off a school computer by chance? School machines may very well have a particular setup that reboots the system profile on startup.

If you are working for a company, I would check with your companies IT department.

I'm necroing this because I've run into this same problem with MAX 2022.  Deleting the maxFxoCache.dat file solved it for a day, but after the computer was shut down overnight objects have once again started going invisible.

The strangest thing is that it only applies to one specific texture in the scene.  Others do not seem to fail to display properly.  Is there a permanent fix for this issue yet?
