If this is only a Nvidia driver problem, why Max 2016 is working without problems in that area? That suggest that there is something from the Max side that could be changed to make it OK.
Hello @Anonymous,
Max 2016 wasn't created for Windows 10, which has updated requirements for driver development. Take a look at this thread, it's W10 people that are most affected. Also, 2017 and later were coded to take more advantage of the GPU which puts even more stress on the drivers and OS.
@Anonymous,
It affects 2017 and 2018 until it is addressed.

Yes, the issue persists in Max 2018 as well. This thread was created in August of 2016. It is now almost a year later and we have a new version of max with the same problem yet to be fixed. Is there any indication as to when we can expect this problem to be resolved? I too have to default to Max 2016 as the most confident stable version for my day to day billable work. My maintenance is up for renewal in sept, and I hate that basically the only reason I am still interested in renewing is because I need to retain previous version rights so I can still use a version of max that works. I would like to be happy about renewing max so I can continue to utilize a great program with new innovative features, etc, but that just isn't the case if the software is unusable. I basically feel trapped because I have to renew to be able to use 2016, but I don't want to renew unless I can be confident that I am getting more than the ability to use old software. Please expedite this fix because I know all of us are very anxious to use Max daily and be confident it will function as advertised.
Hello @Anonymous,
It's a driver issue to be fixed by NVIDIA. All you should have to to do in the meanwhile is switch to DX9. I understand your POV and I respect it, but I have done all I can do until this issue is resolved via drivers.

Anyway these are changes done from Autodesk side to take advantage of windows 10 and Nvidia and are not working. If they are not working it would be logical to step back to how was done in Max 2016 that is perfectly compatible with Windows 10 driver support and the Nvidia drivers.
There is no point to do changes in Max to take more advantage of the GPU if it is necessary to use DirectX 9 that is slower and with less features. It is just the opposite to an upgrade.
And depending of Nvidia to fix this could mean another year or never before this is fixed. You simply has not control of what Nvidia can do and a year has already pass. They seem to have very little interest to fix it.
I really like Max and this simply try to point a constructive critic. It is a bit odd to have a roadblock like this with no end visible.
one year, and still no fix? i would like to move to 3dsmax2017 or even 3dsmax2018. i but i cannot, just because of this viewport crash/freeze.
this is very poor from autodesk side. sorry to say that, i am deep disappointed

Hello @all,
The updated drivers are released now at NVIDIA.com.
GeForce driver 384.76 is available for GeForce users.
Quadro drivers are specific to the model number, see NVIDIA.com for details and the update. The release date for fixed drivers is roughly the 16th of June or later versions.
These drivers fix the viewport freezing issue and this fix should be included in all versions moving forward. Our very own @gregg_lagnese has performed extensive testing and we've gotten confirmation from the community so I am confident that I can finally mark this issue as Solved. Thank you all.

Is it verified to fix the viewport freezing issue in 2017+?
Hello all,
Ok thank you for the update. The version we tested internally was a beta version and it passed the tests, but maybe when it was rolled into the main drivers something happened. I'm ringing bells now. In the meanwhile you might want to be sure you remove all traces of old drivers before installing.

Oh that is such good news. Thank you for the confirmation. I think there was a minor communication issue about which release the fix was in and I'll own that one. Thanks all for the update and confirmation.

M5000, as in Maxwell?
I wonder if that means the Pascal P5000 works too?
This could be good news?
