Cloud-Based Autodesk Vault with APS API Integration

Cloud-Based Autodesk Vault with APS API Integration

Hello Autodesk team,

I’d love to see a cloud-based version of Autodesk Vault that integrates seamlessly with the Autodesk Platform Services (APS) API ecosystem. This would be a game-changer for teams aiming to modernize their workflows and leverage cloud-native capabilities for data management, collaboration, and automation.

If there’s any private beta or early access program around this idea, I’d be genuinely excited to participate and contribute feedback.

Thanks for considering this!

Description
With SMB, SME and Large Enterprise customers embracing cloud based technologies in workflow and management plans, software platforms once thought to be used exclusively in closed LANs/WANs are new being vetted for use in cloud hosted environments. Vault currently accommodates authentication technologies which assume use within a closed, highly secure network environment. That poses some challenges when attempting to implement Vault into a cloud hosted environment where an enterprise customer may need to need to explore flexible and adaptive validation technologies for access and authentication.

Impact
Current implementations require connection to Vault / IIS using fixed authentication protocols and methodologies. These are methodologies are rigid in terms of external validation requirements that integrating Vault into a cloud environment may need. For example, providing access to an ADMS in a cloud hosed Virtual Machine in its current form would require an enterprise to open ports and rely exclusively on Vault act as a security gateway. Given significant exposure to the billions of users on the internet and the security vulnerability that brings, many enterprise customers may be uncomfortable/unwilling to allow Vault to act as a final security gateway between the internet and their valuable data.

Severity
Medium short term – High long term.

Solution
Provide a protocol connection model with token passing API which can communicate with Vault/IIS through a flexible connection translator and provide a robust reverse authentication tool for external participants.

So are they still uncomfortable with it when using SSL & Windows Authentication?

Hey Scott...

I don't think it's so much that they're uncomfortable with SSL and Windows Domain Authentication, but rather, they may have specific requirements in their system architecture that need a degree of flexibility which are not limited to application endpoint security architectures.  In many cases, endpoint authentication is the last hurdle in a series of filters, checks & balances before final application authentication.  While SSL & Windows Authentication are accepted means of authentication, they are not the only means and methods that savvy IT groups like to employ to mitigate risk.

A flexible architecture which adds capabilty to the authentication process is something I believe IT departments are looking for as more and more services are exposed in the cloud.   Enterprise Architectures and architectural requirements are becoming more and more strict as organizations add more and more service offerings in an effort to stay connected and enhance/expand existing service offerings.

Thank you for posting the idea. However, we do not plan on creating a Cloud-based Vault.

How come my post in 2025 and get answers from 2015? 😂

I'm still not convinced, all this talk about security doesn't make sense to me, you secure Vault data as you secure ACC, BIM 360 data.
