Change Property Mapping - Assign Item

If you do a change in your property mapping, e.g. add a property mapped to an item, then via Assign/Update Item you have no chance to get these changings into your item.

Because first you have to add the property manually to the item, then you get via Update/Assign Item the new value of the document into your item.

Question:

Why does Assign / Update Item not create the additional property in an existing item?

We have 166.962 items at this time.

How can we proceed without clicking each single item and add a property?

We all know, by the time we have to do any  changings in the configuration.

It will be very helpful to give changings in the property mapping the full function via Update/Assign Item, like it is in a new item.

That is indeed frustrating.

A workaround for populating items with new properties at our company is to change the category forth and back.

For example you could create a dummy category as duplicate of your actual category. Changing the category will add all missing properties. You can do this for multiple items but for 166.000 items I would recommend creating a simple application using the Vault API.

The meaning of my post is a little different;
I'm not talking about the categories to which you can assign properties, but my topic is about modifying property mapping and adding these new entries to an already existing item in the Itemmaster.

After this procedure, you can use the Assign Item to insert the entries in the property material of the item.

I got your point, my workaround is exactly referrring to this problem.

If you change the category of an existing item, all missing properties of the new category are added. If you change it back to the original category afterwards, that's it! That is the fastest way instead of adding properties one by one, as this can be done for thousands of items at once.

Please note that properties are never removed. So you should create a copy of your actual item category with all required properties.
